1985 200 big red starting problems

I have just got a 200 big red (I think)

It is in pretty got condition considering its age

Apparently it was driven into a shed 4 years ago and just left there

My biggest problem is that when I push the start button the starter just spins without catching.

I have taken the side casing off and all looks well, all the gears have teeth etc. I have no way of taking the flywheel off but my problem seem to be the starter ring gear thing behind the flywheel. I can put my finger in and spin it in both directions.

I presume it is supposed to "freewheel" what actually makes it catch for the bike to turn over

next question is, how do you get the fly wheel off ??

any ideas where I can get a parts diagram of the offending area

    many thanks

    They didn't make a 85 200 Big Red.

Does it have a kick start or pull start backup?

Post your results from the VIN utility.

Sounds like A 200ES. Search under manuals on the search bar alot are posted on here. You can order parts online or from your local shop. Usually cheaper online. Shop around. I'm not sure about the electric starter but if it is freewheeling at the pinion gear there should be some sort of bendix on the shaft that locks it when the starter spins. Sometimes make sure its lubed good and your battery is fully charged. Good luck!

    thanks that is great.

    that is it

    downloaded the manual

think my problem lies in the gear wheel behind the flywheel, more specifically in the spring and weights that I presume make the gear connect with the help of inertia. As it has been laid up for a few years I hope these are just gummed up and need cleaned out. (heres hoping)

need the flywheel off, any tricks ??
