For as much as the Honda US90 started it all, the ATC185 could be considered the first milestone in Honda's development of the ATC model line of off road vehicles. The ATC185 changed the face of three wheelers as we know them. A dramatic change from the stamped sheet metal frames of the 90s, 110s, and 125s, the 1980 ATC185 introduced for the first time a 185cc vertically up swept style engine surrounded by a full tube frame.
Being indirectly related to the XL/XR motorcycle lineage, the ATC185's engine shares a large amount of parts and design details with several generations of off road vehicles. This lineage also lends itself to the fact that Honda utilized their proven engine design for several displacement variations throughout the ATC line. The ATC200, ATC200s, ATC200m and even the first generation 83-85 ATC200X all share a common engine design and in result have many interchangeable parts. A little known fact, the various crank shaft variations, cylinders, pistons and heads can be interchanged with enough research, in which the right combination can result in quite the performance increase!
The ATC185 series also greatly expanded the ATC's popularity as a utility machine. The larger displacement ATC performed well beyond the capabilities of the venerable ATC90/110 as a load hauling, farm cruising, trailer pulling utility trike! Also of note were the various utility rack accessories available from both Honda and aftermarket manufactures to equip the ATC185 for utility use.
As the trend goes, the ATC185 had a short year before it was renamed the ATC185S. The S designated the model as a sleeker, sportier design with a few refinements not quite blatant to the uninformed. It wasn't long until Honda upgraded the ATC yet again, bumping the displacement up as they introduced the ATC200. As much as one would think the ATC200 would steal the lime light from the ATC185, the smaller engined trike remained in the Honda lineup as just that, a smaller displacement model for several years to come.
I am having problem with my 185s I installed a new carbuerator and now gas leaking from aircleaner I know little about motorcyles and could use some help
how do i test my cdi box or the cdi pulse generator or the stator
You can never tell when you CDI box is good or bad but, The way you test out your coils will require a flywheel puller tool on models with the coils inside the magneto.
Once you have gotten to your coil pack you will need an Ohm Meter to test if weather they a good or bad.As for the Pulser , That is magnetically powered and hardly ever gets bad.
What is exactly wrong with your engine?
i picked up an 83 atc 185, the one with front suspension and its one of the most fun utility atv's ive riden. but my puller keeps breaking, and it never wants to go back in.

I have an 83 185s, and need to replace the front and rear sprockets, does anybody have a step by step guide to do that? I'm new to the three wheeler world and need as much help as I can get with it.
I have an 85 250 r, I bought it sec. hand and it's been totally restored and a bigger carb and all new reids.. It was idling fine when I got it, not it doesn't want to stay idling. Could the gas mixture be too rich? It does smoke more than it should I think, but didn't do that wn I first got it. I haven't ridden it but a lil. I think that I may have mixed the fuel too rich in fear of mixing it too lean....
I have a 83 185 and it has front suspension yet it says above that it doesn't come with it Iwas told it was a 84 but when iI typed my vin in it said 83 bit couldn't show make etc how do I figure out what model I have as I need some parts like the recoil and the front sprocket is missing the c clip and a bolt which I believe is why my chain jumps.
