I just got all my parts together and started her up, it making a noise like metal hitting metal, kinda in rocker box. the rockers are grooved pretty bad i guess, the left one wouldn't adjust, it went all the way counterclockwise but i did do the right one right I'm pretty sure. timing is right on. It starts up fine otherwise.

The cam chain is loose a bit, i have a new one but I have to go buy a socket. I tore it down again and inspect the vavles and piston and i don't see any marks or anything. no other damage i can see but the noise is as loud as the stock motor.

it's smoking too, but i think it's just oil in the parts. rings look new, but im not sure.

are you sure you turned the rocker adjustment the right direction? One goes one way and the other goes the other way. Anyway you look at it, it sounds like you answered your own question.

From the '86 Service Manual

1)Loosen the valve adjuster lock bolts fully.
2)Move the intake AND exhaust valve adjusters counterclockwise fully, until resistance is felt.
3)Then move them BOTH clockwise the equivalent of 1/2 graduation (.003).
4)Tighten the adjuster lock bolts (making sure the adjusters do not move).

I guess im mistaken, anyway if you say it moves all the way without resistance, you have a problem there.

yeah the exhaust one goes all the way to the left with is counterclockwise, the right firms ups and is adjusted right.

I'm buying new rockers on monday, hopefully that's all i need.

Your probably gonna have to change the timing chain and guides.

If those shafts the rockers ride on are scored at all, they'll ruin the new rocker arms....

Did you measure up the cam too??

I have a new timing chain, and I'm going to put it on as soon as it's a runner. the shafts look fine to me, and the cam, i have nothing to measure it.

You may not have the cash, but the chain is a quick fix without replacing the 2 guides..... It REALLY quiets these old motors down
