View Full Version : OTC to invade Malvern Motocross Park July 25th
TimSr

At the regularly scheduled Malvern MX races on July 25th the Ohio Trike Crew will be bringing a handful of three wheeler riders to run in a designated 3 wheeler class for the first time ever! I can remember a half dozen years ago, when I was racing my quad at Malvern, and thinking “what a great 3 wheeler track this would be”. Of course, my inquiry was met with a very swift “we don’t allow them things in here!” back then. What a difference today, when we felt compelled to accept a friendly personal invitation from race promoter Josh McFadden!
We would be happy to have you join us at Malvern! This is not a cut throat class of serious racers that will run you over for a plaque and some points. There are some very talented riders in the group, but we race for fun and exhibition, and deliberate contact is frowned upon. Its one of the safer classes to race in. This is a CRA sanctioned event but an unsanctioned class, so they will not require CRA cards for those racing in trike classes. You don’t need a 250 pinger, or a custom built 450 thumper to get on the track and have a great time. We often have riders sporting a 200X.
As it looks now, there will be just one 3 wheeler class, but if turnout justifies it, we could easily have an “A” and “B” class (based strictly on rider ability and not machine size). It’s helpful in setting up classes if I know you are coming. If you are interested in running, or need more information you can email me. If you would like to see video of OTC in action, go to youtube and search “OTC MX”.
Malvern is the most popular MX track for quads in the CRA, and they are a lot more stringent about compliance with their safety requirements. They REQUIRE working tether kills switch, helmet, eye protection, long pants, long sleeves, and boots that cover the ankles. I’m not sure about gloves. They have turned people away for non-compliance. As with all OTC events, MX racing is a family sport. There will be many young children around. Please adjust your vocabulary to those within earshot of you. The No Pit Riding rule at Malvern is strictly enforced. No alcohol before racing.

If you guys just hand me all the cash that you spend building those cheater bikes, Ill be glad to slow down and let you go by!
Just a reminder to everybody to make sure you have all required gear and a working tether kill switch. I havent raced here under the new ownership, but traditionally they have always been pretty formal about that stuff. We should have a decent turnout, and enough to leave a good impression for repeat invites. Flyin Brain and Carl are maybe's, but it still looks like just one class, but there are no eliminations like at the indoors.

Here is a shortcut not listed in their directions. Take 43 S. or 44 S. and turn left on Elson St. If you miss Elson St, youll still be following their posted directions. Elson St comes right into the track entrance. Or if you feel safer, just stick with their directions, and Ill point yo an easy home.
Garageboy is attending MidOhio Vintage Days that day. Flyin Brian is a maybe, as well as Carl. Max, doe sthis mean youre in? What are you racing?
That's it!!!!!!!!!! You're sleeping with the dogs!
I dont know why you wish to punish your dogs and reward this punk!
Crazy70man, I 2nd the opinion that you wont need 1st gear, especially on a 200X. If anything, you may top out on this track. Its a fast track, with a downhill start.
This one will be hard to call because we've never raced a track like is before, but I will say its a fast moving track, and tends to be alot more favorable to pingers than most other tracks, especially the downhill start. I used to race there on my 250R quad. Its hard to guess on this one but If I had to pick my favorites for this track it would be Louis, Kintore, and the Snake, and Id add Flying Brian if he makes it.

Do you think this will be $25 entry fee?
Any idea what they have for concessions? Nearby food? Brown bag it?

I havnet been there in quite a while but my guess is $20 race fee, and $10 to get in. CRA not required for trike class.
They used to run a well stocked concession there with burgers, hot dogs fries, nachos, and a bunch of other stuff. I cant remember but I think they had other sandwiches also. I would guess it to still be running, but that was under the old owners when I was last there. There is a McDonalds right before the track on rt 43 if you dont take the Elson St shortcut. I cant remember what else is there. We usually stop in Canton on the way.

I am happy to say that Malvern is now my favorite MX track - super high speed track - plenty wide for passing - and what appears to be trike built jumps . This picture was actually taken during practice - but a man can dream - right?
SBJones - The racing at the back of the pack is just as fun as the battles up front. Bring out the air cooler - you will find someone on your skill level to compete with.

BIG THANKS!! goes out to Tim Sr and the promoters of the Malvern RaceWay, KILLER event! Once again the fences were full for moto 1 of the 3wheeler event. It doesn't hurt when the anouncer calls everyone on the line CRAZY, in a fun way. The anouncer was impressed by the speed as well with coments like "these guys are really getting at it!" As for the race action it was outstanding and yes the 5-Hundy was tuff to hold on to in moto2..Nice job Louis! It looked like from the frist gate drop in moto1 Kintore just might get his 5th overall win of the year. It was an impressive battle win from gate to checker. Up until the chain break of the Pepsol 450(in the 5th turn) the battle for the lead was not out of reach for the battling top 4. The quick pull off gave Josh just enough to strech 2nd for the finish. Again the action in the field was good as ever. Tim Sr had his son to contend with for much of moto1 with Raffa diving the inside line at times. Obiviously the switch to the 250R is just what the Dr. ordered (I vote Jr as most improved Speed...really coming on). I could go on for hours but the treatment for the OTC was excellent. Little do the racers know they were all mentioned on the gate where they were from # and machine. In moto 2 they must have said Louis M from MD 10times with so in so in 2nd right down the line. For some guys the event went better than expected for others it may have been a learning curve. I believe all in all the opinion of the track is RAVED REVIEWS!! It would be cool if the placed allowed overnights heck maybe they do? It was just a long trip for some of you'all and I was beat when I got home and I didn't race...plus I live less than 2hrs away. Thanks to all who raced for the great action and Tim Sr and the OTC for the invite.:beer

Thanks to everybody who came out to race or to take pictures and cheer us on! I got to talk with the promoter, and the announcer afterwards, and they were all very happy with our performance. There were also two CRA board members there who extended their welcome and pleasure at seeing us there. The spectator expectations of slow motion widespread carnage never materialized, but I dont think they were disappointed with the surprise they got. One of the bike racers stopped by and spoke with me, saying he had heard all about us, but had never seen us before, and he felt it was real treat. You guys should all be proud of the job you did, and the way in which you represented us. I was told all we need is a phone call to run another trike class, or anyone can race in the Extra Quad class at any event. Malvern's practice nights are on certain Wednesday evenings, which wont work for most of you, or me. (CRA limts when member tracks can hold open practices) There were a lot of spectators there, but the actual turnout was extremely low for Malvern, due to weather fears. Expect about double of that on a typical Malvern Sat night race.
I was proud to be beat by Jr in the first moto, by two spots, with Russ in between. I beat him by one or two spots in the 2nd moto. I never cut him any slack, either.
The bad part about night races is its extremely difficult to get good photos or video, so most footage is almost exclusively the first moto. Somebody shot video on my camera also. Maybe Rachel? Ill post it when I can. The track was in much better shape for the 2nd moto, and people were riding a lot faster. I know the front runners were still in sight by races end.
We actually could hear the annoucer introducing us from the start gate. Jr stood and raised his arms when they introduced him. "Josh Ball from Kintore, Ohio!" Cracked me up. I told him about it later.
Great job everyone. Look forward to seeing you all at Lightning on August 22-23 weekend for the OTC Jamboree!!!
In the mean time, we will be racing Summit Co Fair Aug 1st, and Medina Co. Fair Aug 4th.
