Hey guys this is my first post and I need some of your guys help. I saw 3 days ago an 87 250sx with 12' rims on it. I was wondering if anything is needed to be added to have rims that big? Was anything used for clearance on the back drum? I'm wanting to go with bigger rims on my 85 250sx. Seems kinda difficult to find some rims for the 250sx. Thanks

12" rims must be from a utility quad?

It doesn't do much other than allow you to run HUGE 25" or larger tires on a machine meant to have 22" or 20" tires.

They should clear the drum, it's some 8" rims with a small bell that don't clear the 85SX. The 86/87SX has a bit more room with a revised drum and hub setup and more rims fit.

250CC can only spin so much, it will drive great on dry flat land but will bog down in anything sticky if you get too aggressive and large.

couldint changing the size of the back tires to much effect lubrication of the engine? angle the bike sits?

I'm not sure I'm wanting to go with 12's. Was thinking more like maybe 9s or 10s. Just curious if I needed anything to add for bigger wheels. What about running some 9s in the back and keeping stock 8 in the front? Think it will ride weird? What about the front, would a 9' work with a large bell wheel. Thanks for your help guys.

Are you just going with bigger rims to improve your tire selection? Or for the bling factor? If not the latter, there are lots of tires that fit 8 or 9 inch rims out there. Are you staying with a 22 inch tall tire or going larger/smaller?

Most 9 inch rims should fit on the SX. There are such a huge variety of rims out there it's hard to know how each will fit. The rear could potentially be set up with any width or height. The front will need to be no more than an 8 inch width or you will likely rub on your forks. The aftermarket makes some nice 9x8 rims. I narrowed a wider rear rim for the front of my SX to make my own 9x8; I was ready to ride and didn't want to wait on new parts.

If the rear rims backspacing is not the same or close as factory; you may need a spacer to make up the difference or to widen the track of the rear tires and improve stability. On the SX, you may need to use spacers to keep the rear tire from rubbing the muffler.

If there is a difference in the rim diameter and all the tires are the same height overall, it would be extremely difficult to feel that difference while riding. If you are used to your current tires and switch to new ones, you can feel a difference even on the same rims. I don't know if you still have the original Ohtsu's on yours, but swapping to a mud/knobby/paddle type of tire will have more of an affect than the rim size.

Anytime you modify something out of stock it will feel different; good or bad. Learn your machine and remember it's not stock anymore.

Thanks for the all the info. I'm thinking about going with some 9s on the back to lift it up alittle bit and putting on some XCT holeshots for the all terrain. Really don't want to have to mess with front rim. Front rim seems hard to find one that will work. Still have original tires from 85 on it.
