should i bore or hone?

i got my 200es project moving along, and i was wondering if i should bore or get the machinist to see if he can hone out the scratches, the scratches are very light but black in colour, i can just barely feel them with my finger nail but they are there, theres the pistonhttp://img26.imageshack.us/i/dsc08202k.jpg/. and heres the cylinder,http://img199.imageshack.us/i/dsc08205bxy.jpg/

i want to keep the cost low, but i don't want it to be a smoker
and the engine block surface has some scratches from where someone used what appears to be a screw driver to take off gaskets:rolleyes: i lightly sanded the surface but they are still there a bit, should i get it redecked? its only holding back oil. i can't get a pic its just too micro for my camera. thanks in advance

do it right and do it once.

as for the gasket, just clean it up nice and use some yamabond in that area for reassembly for peace of mind

that piston is toast and the cylinder does need to be bored to next size.im sure you can get piston/rings and gaskets on ebay for less than $100 and a good bore job less than $70.do it right,so you wont have to do it again in a few months.

^^I agree it cost me $100 for a new Wiseco and $50 for a bore/hone on my 200x. I tried to do just rings on my 185s and it still smoked after slapping it back together.

The big factors of bore or hone are, is the cylinder out of round, and do the rings of the current piston fall within factory specs? If you meet both of these conditions, then you should only need rings. If you don't meet either of these conditions, then you bore. Don't spend unnecessary money if you don't have to. Also alot of time when the engine smokes after this is either the break in of the new rings, or the head is tired and needs reworked. Most people either overlook redoing the head or don't check the connecting rod for having too much play. If you have too much play in the connecting rod, your fresh piston and bore won't last long anyway.

I am leaning toward having it bored and starting fresh I want this to be a turn key and go trike, I am taking it in and having it looked at by the machinist he will also check the mating surfaces. Piston kits on eBay are fairly cheap and I already have the gaskets
