I bought a 84 200es a few weeks ago needs some work but I was looking for a project. Anyways I tried to adjust the cam chain by loosening off the bolt (I have done it on my other two machines so I know the sound it makes when you loosen the bolt) but this one does nothing when i back it off. Is this a sign that something is not right with the chain or what am I looking at here. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

it could be that your tensioner guard inside is worn out to much, or maybe its not there?,

How can I tell if it is not there I took the bolt right out and there is some sort of black thing inside of there.

thats the tensioner, it could be so worn down though that it wont stop the clicking, have u checked valve clearance? that could cause a clicking noise too

So there is probably nothing I can do about the tensioner? Besides taking the motor apart.

im not 100% sure its the tensioner making the noise, and i dont think theres a way to tell if the guard is wore out from the outside, theres alot of memebers more knowledgeable then me. they may have another solution,

first so a vavlew adjustment. if still got noise,(with motor running) take a very small screw-driver then take the top bolt out of the hole for the tensioneer adjsutment (10mm wrench) and then take a 14mm wrench and loosen the big part up quite a but. now with that screw-driver take it and push it into the hole and see if the noise gets louder or softer. push it in and let it pop out a few times and let the tension adjust itself out. when done, tighten the bolt, if still noisey, the guide and chain are worn. time to replace them.

you don't have to take the entire motor appart but it is a pitta none the less. download a manual off the site in my sig and good luck.
