Hey everyone, im new here, but i have some questions, i just came into possesion of a 1985 honda atc 250es, and it didnt move, i could feel the gears engage, but it didnt want to go, like the clucth was slipping, me not paying attention at first didnt check the oil, it was down to the bottom mark, added two quarts, then it moved a little more, i adjusted the increase/decrease play screw to the increase side, it moved great motored along awsome, then a little later, stopped wanting to go, increased the play a little more then it worked, now, only way to get it to move at all, is to decrease the play almost till you cant move shifter, and hold it down, and it only works in 1st, so any input would be greatly appreciated thanks a bunch.

Also i have another motor, not running, but the guts still look good, just curious as to what the clutch is, the sliver looking part, with the rings and springs. or the black bit, attached to the crank, im a total novice to these things

Welcome. Download a manual, it will answer alot of your questions.

Thanks a bunch man, i will look it over, im still not sure as to what the problem is, just tried to move it again a few mins ago, it jerks a little as you engage the gears sometimes, only with the play decreased almost all the way, but barely moves at all

It has 2 clutches.
One that allows it to idle in gear but provides a smooth take off which is the centrifugal clutch.
The other is the manual clutch thats engaged when as you lift the shift lever which is the manual clutch.
Get somebody who knows about those motors to give you a hand, hopefully something is more stuck than burned but it sounds like it was pretty low on oil.......

My father in law had the same problem turned out to be his hubs were shot on the back tires. Something easy you might want to check.
