What oil do yall run in yalls 3-wheelers? Wanting to know for my 81 185s. Manual says to use 10w40. What brand do you recommend?

Any 10-40 will be sufficient. Consider how far oil has come since 1981. Any major off the shelf brand far exceeds ANYTHING that was availiable back then........Just keep it conventional.

I use mobil in everything. Plus (and some or many may not agree with me) I use a little lucas oil treatment (Not alot). My old 200s keeps on running and has no issues with shifting at all. She just keeps plugging along.

I don't recommend it for several reasons..... any leaks will get worse , any blow by will get worse, not good for clutches (disregaurd if it is motorcycle syn) its not needed or designed for it. My buddy used it in a low hour xr250 it started pouring white smoke and needed to be re-built was only ran for a few minutes

I used lucas once before in a wolverine that I had, (I know, I know) but it also held 3 quarts of oil. Real simple to figure out the ratio, and it was an auto clutch. Really didn't make any noticeable difference anyway, so I'd probably vote against it.

anyone try the 15-40 Shell Rotella T?

Alot of people run that in their bikes over on thumper talk, and it seems to be a great oil for a machine that shares engine and tranny oil.

That what I use in all my 3 wheelers. The fact that we have a 55 gallons drums :D in the corner of the garage explain why I use it. My YTM-200 run this oil for the last 20 years and the engine is still top shape.

I have use QS 10w30 or 10w40 in my BR since it was new in 85. It gets changed at least once a year more if I ride it alot. Of course it has never been abused.

I would go to a shop and get oil made for 4 stroke motorcycles, the oil they use in cars no longer has zinc in it which means no layer between cams and cam walls...

The Rotella T stuff, which is supposed to be used in diesels, has the zinc stuff in it! Something about diesel motors requires it. Lots of guys with older cars that run solid lifters use it.

I think AutoZone or O'Reillys carries it. I get it at Farm and Fleet but they are only in IL, WI and IA.

valvoline vr-1. I listen to the people who beat on their equipment and don't have their clutch fail.

Not entirely true... Although Rotella does have higher ZDDP (zinc) levels than gas engine oils, it is not as much as it was back in 1985. (gotta love that emission BS) I work in a hot rod shop, so we are dealing with old motors all the time. Here is a interesting read on the Zinc Dialkyl Dithio Phosphate that they have been taking out of the oils, including diesel oil...

The older CI-4 Rotella had about 1400ppm zinc content. The new one CJ-4 still has 1200ppm which is still quite high in zinc conent, makes it great for ATV engines. Any gasoline oil today with a SM rating doesn't have more that 800ppm with the gov. regulations, bad for flat-tappet cam engines and atv's/motorcycles with a wet clutch.
