Hi been searching the forum for threads regarding the one way clutch. The symptos was being hard to start with a metallic clunk when it did. took it apart but I see no damageto the metal pieces of the one way clutch. Can somebody tell me what to look for? It was running perfect before that. Like always thanks for any help.

well first off i would bench test the starter. hook it to a battery and see if it spins freely with no noise. then check out all the redustion gears for any damage or missing teeth. work your way through things. one step at a time. check the surface of the flywheel and the condition of the one way clutch.

The started runs good, I took the gears out and the one way clutch looks good and all the pieces are there, can you see if the one way clutch is bad just by looking at it?

If you heard the whirl and clunk, then it's bad. You may not see any wear whatsoever, but if you play with it in your hand, you'll find it ever so slightly slip once in awhile. Add to that the load of turning over an engine and there you have it.
Are these motors like the 250ES/SX where in the one way clutch is within the centrifugal or take-off clutch?? The collar that bearing rides on wears down too and I honestly try to replace both if I'm in there......

While you are at the one way clutch take off the oil filter cover and clean it out, they really pack up with dust
