Howdy folks.

1986 Honda 250SX.
Rebuilt stator installed.
Sometime gets spark to plug sometimes no spark.
Swapped with another working stator.
Same problem.

The mechanics working on it are authorized
Suzuki Mechanics. They work on all different
bikes there and have been pretty honest with me.

They saved me alot of $$ when they had to repair
my 1998 RM 125 which I swapped for this old trike.

Anyhow it always takes a really long time to get
your bike back once you drop it off when you need parts.

They dont have an answer yet as to why they cant seem to find out what the problem is. 4 weeks so far.
I told them if they go over an hour of labor to stop
and call me before they continue.

So far they have installed a new rear shock 350 bucks.
New fork seals and brakes.
New clutch cable and choke lever.
New brush plate for starter. Motor is solid. No problems.

I have spent so far about $1,100 on parts and labor.
They told me after this I should be all set and caught up
on maintainance which was never done by the owners
befor me. ( 2 previous owners).

I always thought Hondas were bullet proof.
Is this normal wear and tear ?

The mechanics told me if I brought this trike to Honda
they would replace the whole electrical system and I
would be out anothe $ 1000 bucks which I cant afford so they are doing this one staep at a time to eliminate the high
cost. They assured me that labor on this type of problem
should not be anything that will hurt my wallet.

Well I told em 1,100 sure as hell did hurt my wallet
so I dont know what to think.

They try and take this hey buddy type approach but the bottom line is pay up sucker.

Any advice or experience you have with this please let
me know.

My email address is neuyawk@netscape.net

Otherwise besides that when she runs she runs like a champ
and there isnt anything like riding an old trike.
Its so awesome !!

Thanks in advance.

Howdy folks.

Lmao, That is me "Howdy"!!

First off welcome to the site. We hope you enjoy it!!

Now for the problem and possible fix. I currently am working on a "Project" that is getting a 250sx motor trasplant. Yesterday we went to fire it up and had basically the same problem as you are having. We was able to fix it pretty easily. I'm 99% sure our problem was the ground wires.
We unbolted and polished the ground wires up and then tightened them back down. Then we then went through and unplugged each other wire one at a time and plugged them back in making sure every connection was good. After that we had very good spark. I would try that and hopefully you have your problem fixed.

Where are you located? We have users from all over and someone might be close enough to give you a hand and save some $$ at the same time. ;)

man I just bought a big red a few weeks ago and haven't had one since I was 8 or so. Obviously, I didn't learn anything about maintenence back then so I'm learning it all now. I've learned EVERYTHING from people on this site and have the red running like a top. It's pretty easy to work on. I've had so much fun messing with it that I bought a 110 yesterday (really nice one). Anyway, if you want to save alot of money, you'll have to get dirty. If you can't figure it out, just ask--these people know everything!

It sounds to me like the coil is not grounded properly, either the ground wire or where it grounds to the frame itself .. make sure its getting good contact. I had the problem with a 185s recently that started every time I went through water, or hosed it off... did the exact same thing, and eventually did it when there was no water involved.

I dont know if that machine has the same spark advancer as the 185.. if it does make sure that is clean and everything is making good contact.

The mechanics back and forth on the phone with Honda
They think it might be something called a pulse sensor ?
Is there such a thing.
I think I might be using the wrong words or something.

Howdy hit the nail right on the head. Id go thru or replace the wiring first, before sinking $$$,$$$.$$ in electric parts.

Hey Howdy, how tricks in Celina?? How was the Lake Festival? Im originally from St Marys good place to be from :clap

first, make sure its gota a good ground, second, if it was anything like my old dirt bike, then cut out the wire harness, and only use the 4 main wires, coil, lights and other ones (cant remeber)

then, take a test light and ground it to your coil ground and stick it in where the coil connects, kick over the machine and if it lights up good then thats a good sign! check all the wires, only 3 i think should get power when you kick it over, then, re wire it yourself, take regular wire for your lights and what ever else you put on, turnin signals maybe?? lol.

Hope this helps.
