I need some good brand names for high heat paint and primer that lasts and doesn't come off that easily. Also, what are some good ways of making it stay on and not bubble or crack?

ah the alusive question.how and what to paint high heat areas and have it last.for exhaust i recomend chrome,i have had no luck with head pipes, but silencers will hold up decent with premium high heat paint.and engines need a quality paint also, gas and oil will eat most off on contact.

Are you painting the exhaust? I would recommend high temp grill paint. It says it with holds up to 1200 degrees, I have used it on pipes, it lasts for a few years, then I just re do it. Great paint, and very durable. Most of it is like a flat black color, but I found a gloss that I painted a motor, and its working great so far.

I've had good luck with Duplicolor high heat engine paint. It comes in a few different colors also. Keep in mind that prepping the engine is important. Clean it real good and sand it down so the paint has something to grab onto.

yes prep is KEY! make sure all losse paint and debri is off what your painting, sand blast everything to ensure that. use aome denatured alcohol to make sure no residue is on what your painting, and use a high temp primer. and then hight temp finish paint. will last for year as long as you maintian your machine properly (cleaning)

I use VHT Flame Proof paint... Rated 1300- 2000 degrees... It works better then the standard engine paint. I use it on my headers for my jeep and it holds up better then the stock header paint from the factory... They have a bunch more colors.
Heres a link: http://www.vhtpaint.com/flameproof.html
I did the primer , paint and then satin clear.. Its expensive at $9 a can but on my headers I was able to do 1 pair of long tube headers with no problem plus some for touchups later on.

I tried the BBQ paint on my 400ex header and its starting to burn and flake off after a couple longer rides. It seems to work great on the silencer though. I have a buddy that tried it on his 400ex and got the same results.

I used VHT paint on the engine of my 200x and I ceramic coated my head pipe and muffler. I would never paint a head pipe again. Only ceramic coating and baking it.

I've used numerous Hi temp BBQ paints with so-so results.
Lately, I've powdercoated them with high temp powder and guess what?? Those don't hold up either!!
The combination of heat contacting mud, water, salt and snow is noit an easy thing to deal with. Of course the garage boys or people that wash there trikes before they even bring them home, have things that hold up.
I have not found anything that works yet.......

i know GULP chrystler engine paints hold up nice, when i was a bit younger i made a 6hp honda gokard. i painted the engine hemi orange ( my friend worked for crystler he stole me some paint) i painted everything hemi orange.. mufler. entire head.. sparkplug EVERYTHING.. through several hours of riding.. sitting outside for months on end.. no flakes or cracks in the paint. dealerships have the best engine paints. if u can get your foot in the door if u know some one who works for a plant your set.

Tremclad high heat paint, 8$ for a spray can, worked awesome, has held up on my head pipe for half a dozen or more hard trips, the mud has now baked into it, but if clean after each ride it should hold up great, the paint seems to have aluminum flakes in it and it is the only thing Ive got to stay so far, ill get the exact name tomorrow night. o yeah it recommends not to prime it first

Another vote for duplicolor and good prep. The painting is the easy part....you can spend weeks preping though. I use a little wire brushes and screw drivers to make sure any loose paint in the small areas is removed. Then a nice coat of engine primer. Then a few days later the final coat.

Now what would be your recommended primer?

rustolem makes a high temp primer rated for 1200 that what i use, just the primer no paint.holds up pretty good.i have used vht and to me it works better that duplicolor.

Could you use paint on top of it?
Micahdogg

You should use paint on top of a primer....the point of primer is to create a good bond to the metal so your paint can lay down nice.
I use duplicolor's engine primer too. I think rustoleum and vht are probably fine too, but whatever brand primer you use I would probably use their brand paint too.
