I read this is supposed to get rust out of a gas tank. The tank isn't very bad but i'd like to clean it up some. Just don't know where to start looking for this stuff.

Should be able to get it at Lowe's or Home Depot. Look in the floor cleaning stuff, that's where I found it last time. We used it in a concrete floor we resurfaced.

You need acetone to neutralize the muriatic acid. or it will rust again in no time.

Good time to coat that tank with kreem or redcote.

That stuff is BANNED at my Walmart, HD and Lowe's......

Deepa had to get me a gallon from?? but I know that masons use it often so you may have to look to a masonry/brick/stone supplier.

I bought a gallon from my local Home Depot about a month ago for some brick work.. wasn't aware that it worked on rust though.

It etches the tank. You will need to coat your tank after you do this as it will cause a flash rust within 30 mins of dry time.. If there are any pinholes be prepared they will show up in this process..

The Kreeme kits come in a 3 state system and one of them is the ACID..2nd is the flush system to clean out water and acid, last is the coating.
Once you do this flush acid with soap and water to neutralize the acid and then ACETONE (I Like MEK) to get rid of all water and residue.

I recommend the Redcoat over Kreem as I have used kreem and I am not sure I am all that happy with its non-user freindly ease. Though it isnt all that bad, just not as sturdy it would seem to redcoat.

What ever you do not dump the whole bottle of coating into a tank. And be ready to do all at once. Especially after the acid bath.

I tried the acid thing in my 81r tank. It didn't do a hole lot.

Seems like a lot of hassle comes with using the acid. I think I'll try CLR for now because the rust is miniscule in the tank. It probably wouldn't even hurt if I didn't even do anything to it.

^F that! Let me tell ya, that acid is DA BOMB!! It gets your tank NAKED...

And if pool places have it cheapie cheap, then I'm gonna head on down to my local pool place. I've got a 70 tank I need to fix-em-uppa!

I'm sure it's all based on where you live and who bitches about it being a bad chemical - BLAH BLAH BLAH. But.... around here, I got real pissed off one Saturday when I went to 5 different stores and they said it was "no longer carried because it was dangerous"

It definitely does the trick though and JENN gave you guys some sound advice......

Depending on the amount of rust an acid bath can take as long as 24 hrs plus. The flush is aprox 20 mins and the coating is about 2 hrs. You poor a little in to coat poor more until you get a very nice lining. I did 3 tanks with one Kreeme system to give you an idea. 110 , 70 and a 200s. If I recall correctly the stupid bottle said dump whole thing in and repour excess out. I disagree.

The acid and MEK is reusable in applications until ACID is nuetralized..

It is not one of those 5 minute jobs.. This one is an all day plus project.

In a 70 tank on the coating put enough little cappachino straws up the outlets of the tanks so the coating does not clog up the holes.

There is nothing like Acid that will take rust like this does..

And the final product be well worth it.. It is worth the trouble

Oh yeah if You get pinholes save your acid for the flash rust set in.. Cause now is a good time to seal and braze up them thar holes.. Re-put acid back in flush the the flash rust (a really quick process) and proceed..

Minscule rust is easly taken by over counter stuff at auto stores,, unfortantly you need to make sure moisture officially stays out of the tank and gas will not cause it to rust, but I will not say the same for ethonal based garbage.. But I would not take a project like this unless the tank was over the edge..

Muriatic acid is an old-fashioned name for hydrochloric acid, yeah the same stuff you're always warned about mixing other cleaners with since it makes toxic fumes. Another poster IS CORRECT, it's sale is restricted in lots of places since it is often used in making crystal meth.... Same reason Pseudofed is now only available in the pharmacy. I'd be real wary about using/keeping it in large quantities. Very reactive, seriously.:(
