Hello, I have a 84 200X that has a sownshifting issue with. It mostly is 2nd & 1st gear but has slipped in the others but not as often. I can feel the gearshifter slip so am guessing it is in the gearshifter but am not sure what exactly to look for. It goes up thru the gears perfectly but just have problems down shifting. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Have you checked to see if its just the lever slipping on the shaft?

The gearshifter is not slipping on the shift. It feels like it is slipping over the shift cam.

Pull the right side cover and look at the shift linkage.

take right side cover off and look for rounded off sides on your gears,or loose or sloppy shift linkage

Sounds like the gear on the end of the shift shaft may be missing a tooth. I've seen this several times. Always with these symptoms.

Took it apart and still see nothing out of the ordinary. Put it back together and still the same thing but did discover if I take my foot and push the gearshifter over to the left (away from the right crankcase) it downshifts fine. This leads me to believe that either something is missing on the gearshift linkage or the spring is worn. Just put this engine together so it is possible something is missing but I looked at the part schematic and all appears to be there. Kinda stumped at this point.

I don't see how the rear fender would fit with that muffler pointing towards the sky lol.
