I'm back- 250sx 1985 UPDATE- She runs :)

So I'm sure no one remembers but I had to sell off the only 3 trikes I had left when the economy got bad. I had an 84 110, an 86 200x and an 85 70 but they all got sold.

Well today I was looking through craigslist and I saw an ad for an 85 250sx for a really good price but it didn't have a picture. I called the guy to see what he could tell me about it and after about 15 minutes of chatting I told him I was on my way. I hooked up the trailer and drove the hour to his house not knowing exactly what I was going to find.

Well I was pleasantly surprised when I got there:

So what do you all think? How much is this thing worth? The main things that need work are that I need a new tank, the front brakes need some work, and it needs a battery. I think with some gas it will fire right up though. So where do I start with this one?

I would start with all fluids and making sure it has spark. I'd get it running first(clean the carb/new air filter), then move over the entire bike making sure its not missing anything important. The differential would be second on my list. The tank rusty?

Yep the tank has a little surface rust but it has a hole in it and they tried to JB weld it but it didn't work. The good news is that the petcock was off and all the fuel drained out of the tank. It also has an inline fuel filter on it already.

I hooked some jumper cables up to my truck (with the truck off) and to the battery on the trike and when I turned the key the neutral light lit up. When I thumbed the started the light dimmed but it didn't even try to turn over. I'm guessing it didn't have enough juice or the started is seized up but it could be a dozen other things too.

So do you think it is worth the $100 that I gave for it in this condition? :)

yep, try the kick start..lol also just weld the hole shut.

Well the reverse light lights up and the tranny clicks down into reverse so I'm hoping it will. I just need to get the carbs off and check them before I try to run any gas through this thing. I hope I can have it running this weekend.

It looks like I'm going to need to put some tubes in the rear tires because they aren't holding any air. The beads are leaking on both sides.

I'd love to find a fender for this thing but $150 for one is more then I paid for the whole trike and since I'm not doing a full restore I just can't justify it. I would like a grab rail though.

Okay I posted up what I need for now. I dug into this more today and found some good and some bad, as usual.

The bad news is that the tank leaks like a sieve and the muffler burned a hole in the side of the airbox.

The good news is that the carbs are immaculate arising from the leaking tank I would guess. Also the bike fired up with a spray of starter fluid on the first kick.

If I can just get a tank that holds gas and an airbox/filter on this thing I think I'll have a runner and I can work on the rest a little at a time.

I was gonna say "50-100$" is about all it's worth. It's all about gettin back on the trike wagon anyhow.........

Just don't dump a ton of money into it. You may end up 1000$ poorer and unhappy with it when it's done. I only say that because that SX is in fairly bad shape.

welcome back. you got yourself a good price on the trike. i just got mine as well its an 85 and it looks about like yours except the full ignition panel with lights mine was broke so i just cut off what i didn't need and mine for some reason has a Yamaha front fender on it but its a good trike runs strong and mine also has the cut rear fenders on it. i tank it out mudding so often i had to put something on it so i but a trash can and cut to fit and got something working until i can get an actual pair being they run 150 bucks and the front runs 55 bucks and the tank runs 130 so i will e learning but i know a lot about mine so far so if you have any questions just ask and i may have the answer heres some pics of mine.

Well I got home today and my tank and airbox were on the front porch so I got to work. Still needs some tuning and some cleaning up but it's a pleasant start. Oh and reverse works flawlessly too :D. You have to excuse my 2 year old in the background ;)
