Hi everyone,
I recently purchased a 1985 Yamaha Tri Moto 225, but cannot get it to run. It gets plenty of compression, spark, but only backfires and tries to start. I am just looking for a little direction, could it be the float sticking, exhaust, or anything of that nature?

sounds like it could be stator related ,maybe a weak spark?

Thanks everyone I am glad to be here. I was kind of thinking timing or the stator as well, but was hoping it could be something easier than timing. I was also going to try and force start it, towing it and see if I could get it to fire. thought maybe if it was the float sticking, that would force it to go. Good or Bad idea?

Welcome. Have you opened the airbox to make sure it isn't restricted. If it has been sitting, I'd clean the carb first, it could probably use it anyway, so no time wasted there.
Do you have a manual? There's one in World Class Help.

Thanks everybody, I am planning on cleaning the carb, I think it has been sitting for about a year so it def. needs it. I have not taken a look in the air box yet, but I will be sure to do that.

If you've never cleaned a carb before, here's a good thread by DC.
