View Full Version : 83 185s spark plug won't tighten

I just tried to put a new plug into my 185s and the spark plug goes in fine until you try to tighten it. It just spins there which makes it seem like the threads are bad in the head? I tried 3 different spark plugs. Is there any way to fix this without a new head/rebuild? It runs great and I don't have enough at the moment for a rebuild.

I had the same problem with a weed eater one time and I re-tapped the head and it worked fine. I don't know if that would work on a three wheeler or not.

you will be tempted to retap while on the motor, dont do it.pull the head off and get helicoil kit,do it right the first time and be done with it

I agree....take the head off. I've seen many damaged pistons due to helicoil placement with the head still on!

Just a follow up. Tried to helicore it. Didnt work it was too long and its keeping the exhaust port open. I pulled the motor. Recently bought a 200e engine from a friend for $35. Swapped in the stuff the engine needed(cdi parts, carb) and it fired right up. Did have to grind the frame a tiny bit for the high low. The original engine will be used for parts.
