Just curious as to what everyone has spent on a three wheeler to make it their own?

I'm rather embarassed to say what I'm at... especially since a 350x will only seat one.

Once I see a few responses I might throw a number out there. lol.

I am scared to add it all up but I know I am over the 10k mark with my flat track tecate. The pro tec tri-moto is climbing rather quickly as well. Alot of money for something that sits in my living room!

6-8 g's on the Tecate and 14 years and lately Im thinking its a nice looking piece of junk. A few more dollars and Im done but it should look so much better, I think. Seeing some of the rides on the site makes me think mine looks like crap. But for a total restoration of a 1st gen Tecate with all the aftermarket goodies is a worthwhile investment. It will be around as long as I am unless it gets stolen. So for the time and money I think is worth it for a T-3. I could of did a Honda for about 3 g's though. Or that Barn Tri-Z Ive been keeping an eye out for the last 10 years, maybe I will get lucky and will save up a grand and get it. Sweet all original 85 Tri-Z sittin in a horse barn:(
I want it. Can do that one for about a grand easy. It even runs with a good cleaning:w00t:

I don't feel nearly so bad now... thank god.

I'm at 6300 as of a few minutes ago on the 350x...and she's no where near done.

still have to do powder and buy a lot of little parts.

Well, I guess I'm at the lower end of the spectrum. My '81 250R owes $1200, including the purchase price. Still need to spend another 200-300 for it to be "done."

I'm now at $1000 in my 225DX. And it is still sitting in the corner of the garage.
Purchase price: $350
Part quad: $200 and it was a bargain, I used the shift lever, one-way bearing, pegs and rear brake on it, just this stuuf is more than 200$ at the dealer
Tires, 2 Zipper and a Front max: $150
Gasket, lever, brake cable, misc. stuff: 150$
Probably missing something but I did the math a couple of month ago and the summary was $1000.

out of my 6 trikes, my most expensive one is the 250r.....bought it for 850, didnt put a dime into it yet.

next most expensive one was the 225dx....$255, than i had to do a complete top end...bore, piston, rings.

200s....$300, nothing into it yet
200x....freebie,,,just bought a tank and rear shock for $75
110... $75...bought a stator for $23, just need to put it in
tri-zinger.. $30..just need to find a cylinder and piston and get it bored

It's easy to rack up a huge bill with Tecates. I gotta figure the Tecate is the runner-up money grubber with only the Tigers being more costly, and maybe the Cagivas too.

My 86 Tecate 500 has grifted me for probly about $4500 or more, and it is literally a pile of parts. The engine is on the floor in one shed, plastics in the loft, and the frame is in another shed. Someday....

My 81 250r i was in about $4000 back in 2000 or something, atc70 for my girls about $2200. My 83 mugen 250r, alot!!! I am at $4000 now just on all the plastics, mugen kit, axle, swingarm, tank. I barely started even tearing it down. I have a feeling this will be a 10k build ( dont tell the wife ). But of course the only thing that will be non aftermarket or custom is the frame, and that might be a one off also if i will got off my butt and draw something up for billy.

The most expensive 3-wheeler (counting purchase price and parts)I've ever had is either the '85 350X I got in '85($1500), or the new leftover '86 Tri-Z I got in '87($1495 off the showroom floor).

I would say that today the complete/excellent condition....just needed a top-end rebuild.....Cagiva I had in the '90s would be worth the most if I still had it, though I only had about $25 in it.

Wow - you guys drop some serious dough.
I paid $1425 for my 350X. I put on sprockets, chain, cables, bearings, grips, levers, and a couple other goodies and I am still under $2000 easy. I think that is a bargain for a trail bike that looks good and is super reliable.

I probably have $2000 total into the BR, 110, and 70 combined. No show and shine machines here, but they all run great and are complete.

My SX cost $600 to buy.
Since I've gotten, it I've replaced the front and rear brakes, the brake cables, the rear brake cable again when I swapped in the TRX rear for a TRX cable, one brake lever, swingarm bearings and seals, swingarm pivot bolt socket, driveshaft boot, TRX rear lugnuts, several carb rebuild kits, air filter, throttle cable, choke cable, reverse cable, several oil filters, rebuilt everything in the front end from the steering stem forward with new seals/bearings/fork boots/etc, Honda fork oil, numerous brake light bulbs and finally an LED setup, one new starter solenoid, gasket for starter motor gear cover, waterproof fuse holder, rubber mounts for the fuel tank, a few feet of rubber hose, nuts, bolts, cotter pins, added the bicycle trip computer, made my own skidplate, snorkel, front rack, handguards and narrowed the front rim, put in the car horn and waterproof switch, paid a machine shop to weld up my right side engine case when it got smacked by a rock, a new gasket for that case, bought the saddlebags, four red bungee cords, four tiedown straps, two small black bungee nets, towrope, extra fuel container and dedicated tools for the SX, many quarts of gear oil, gallons of engine oil, and barrels of fuel. Ya, and my big tires.

I'm not sure what that all adds up to. Quite a bit I guess, but I'd do it again. In fact I will be with my other SX!

I'll keep a tally on my other SX when I build it. I'm not sure if the $50 purchase price of that machine will help me or hurt me. I will be using some special leftover non-SX parts on it; that's semi secret for now...

I overpaid for my 86 Tecate. Some people's idea of "good enough" just isn't good enough for others. My 85 Tecate I've probly got only $1500 to $2000 total, but that's a rider. The 86 parts are more expensive and the 500cc motor is obviously not original so I've got to make some stuff along the way.

Like I said before, tecate parts are big $$$

Well I paid around 1000 to start with a running Z.

Then I wanted to strip it down and do a "couple" of mods.

Before you know it, I was struck with a clasic case of "I just wanted to clean it up, then decided to go ALLLLL out."

Ive had 2 different bottom ends in it, with 5 different top ends, with 2-3 different wheel tire configurations, different plastics, ect. It all adds up fast, especially when you do things 5 times. Ive learned a LOT, and will most definently not have to spend that much next time to know what I want, and need.

Haha does it really matter.....there is a price to pay to be fast! Its not a secret to have a top notch trike that runs like a bear, and is dependable....its called $$$$ and fine attenton to details. My 1985 Tecate (Doom) set me back a little bit! See you all at trikefest 09'. That if I have any money left over to go.....lol.

.

Are stock replacement axles/swingers really going for $300 each? Then, a NOS engine($1000) PLUS $350 worth of piston, cam, springs.....???

I gave $800 for my Tecate. I then:
-cleaned the master cylinders out, put new fluid in both systems=$5
-cleaned/painted a few things=$15....maybe less
-traded my stock pipe even for a DG, which I then traded even for a Bill's pipe.=free
-traded a cheap car CD player and my stock carb for NEW in box 39mm PWK carb.=free(stereo came with the car)
-new Oury grips-$8
-replaced stator coil-free(traded a sleeved KXT cylinder for new stator....didn't have any money in cylinder....didn't want sleeved)=free
-traded my stock twist throttle for a New in box Motion Pro twist w/new cable=free

I still intend to build the motor......when it quits(read:NEEDS it)....but everything I want to do to it including FTZ porting, replating, piston kit and new crank bearings/seals won't go over =$850.

Swingarm is going +2"=cost a 12-pack of beer for my fabricating neighbor(I don't care if it says Westcoast, Franks, or Bud-Light on it......as long as it's straight and it works:lol:

I want a +4 or +6 axle, but I'll use spacers if I can't afford an axle.
I need a shock, hello 300EX boinger=$60 all day long...works for a flattracker.
I intend to put a smaller Clarke KDX(universal) tank on mine so I can grind the stops more.=$200 (can't skimp much there)

That would be good enough for me.

I see that some people just ride trikes, and that is fine, and some of us enjoy spending our hard earned money to restore / customize them.

Nothing wrong with owning a rider, I have my SX for that. I change diff and engine oil and run cheap gas in it.

My tri-z was an obsession.
My sons ALT was an obsession
my 350X is getting to be one.

I love spending my spare time making my trikes mine. Knowing what I have and how it got there. :TrikesOwn

Once I see a few responses I might throw a number out there. lol.

I'm kind of an old timer, but started out in the early 80's with a 200m and then bought an 1992 250R to race. Didn't spend much on that wheeler, but picked up a sponsor, and bought an 85 250R. Ran it thru Selvy's of Calif, and went on the circuit. Took it to a ATV Drags in Hay's Ks. They had a 100 yd run from a standing start. I could hit 90MPH. I had to spot the 500 Susiki Quads 2 spots to make it a race. Probably had 5-6 grand in that one
Sold everything after a divorce, and regretted it to this day.

Recently bought a 1985 Honda 250SX at a farm auction. It had been rolled. had to replace all the plastic, the handlebars, headlight, grab bar, and some cables. Paid $600 for the hulk, and put another $700 into it for a really good machine. I drive past my mailbox every day, and get on the wheeler to go back to pick up the mail.:D

Probably have $1500 to $2K wrapped up in the 250sx.

I know when I hit the local trails I'm the only 3 wheeler out there, and sure get lots of lookers, and people telling me they used to have on, and had the best times of their lives riding them.:D

I think the question is kind of personal. People pay what the pay. It's really no ones' business. It always seems like the ones that worry about what people don't have too much of their own and for some reason worry about other peoples stuff. I don't really know anymore what I have in my trikes. My last couple of purchases have been a little pricey, but I really got what I wanted and that is all that matters to me. I'm not rich by far, and there are several people who have way more wrapped into their machnes and all their support equipment and parts than I ever will have and I can't say how happy I am that they have what they have. Their have been some pretty stupid threads started about what some people have and don't have. I personally like more about the stories of how people have come across what they have found more than what they paid. I sort of know how much some parts I have gotten cost and I can hardly imagine what some other people have paid for their hobby, but it just depends on how serious you are and what you can afford or think what you can afford sometimes. LOL I have a hard time understanding why some people are hung up on what others pay to play. I've given parts to people to help get them started in this hobby. Sometimes the end result hasn't been too pretty. The parts I sell, I try to get my money back out of them from what I've put in them. It doesn't always work, but everyone I've dealt with has been pretty happy. The parts I have are what I had picked up for my own projects. If I sell a part that isn't really nice, it's because that was the only one I have or have seen. People that know me know I have some pretty oddball stuff. Nothing run of the mill at all. When I bought erectordales' Tiger 250 off of ebay, I had several people PM me and tell me they'd give thier left testicle for a Tiger. I was the only bidder, where were they then? When I purchased erectordales' Tiger 500, where were they then? When the last Tiger 500 came up for sale, there were several people who emailed the seller and basically told the guy he had a gold mine. The trike was worth some money, but it was missing alot of stuff and not worth what some people thought. I was acutally offered the trike for sale before the trike was offerend on here before it hit the classified section. I was the first person that spoke up for the trike when it hit the classifieds and that seller decided our classified section was "mini ebay", all because a couple people who would never buy something like that and have never had or will have a Tiger, put thier opinions in where they never should have been. And the seller ended up listing the trike on ebay and that deal went south when the high bidder backed out of that deal. There are people on here who slhould not worry about what other people pay. There are people on here that should not bid on what they can't afford or will back out of. There are people on here that shouldn't be and reflect negatively on here. If someone wants to tell how much they have into their trike, that should be their perogative, not for people to ask them how much they have paid. This whole thread is really kind of disgusting if you ask me. If anyone hasn't noticed, the people that have really serious money into thier trikes or collections haven't responded. People that are into this for their hobby don't look at it as money. Sure some people go overboard. That is what they want to do. Let people be and enjoy what they enjoy. I personally think the mods should lock this thread. The hobby is about the joy or the obsession of the find, not about how much$$$$$$$$$$$.

On my 86 350X, I picked it up for 500 bucks, probably put another 500 to 600 into it (that my wife knows about) and a few hundo's she doesn't... And then on my 85 BR I bought for 475, and will probably end up sinking another 800 into it... Now I am getting the itch for one of those sweet 500R's the guys are building!!!!

I've realistically probably got $4500-$5g's in my 500 from the time I bought it during the time I raced it as a 250 and then to being the 500 now. (Purchase price, included)

dude let it go:beer...+1.... It is kinda interesting what we have into our T W's. Some spend there money on cars, trucks, bikes and other hobbys and habits. When you get it done, there's nothing like saying I spent X-amount of $ to make it right, the way I wanted it!!:beer !Bought mine for $1500 in good condition and another $500 into my 85'-350X over the last 5yrs. My first ATC 250R was a 85 that was my best friend at the times. It kept blowing base gaskets due to a bad surface on the case. He retired it due to a case of Camaro fever!! (some of you drag racers know what I am talking about!!!) Anyway, he sold it to me (I was basicaly the mechanic and we grew up on one and a half 88 trx250rs one was a fire death kill and the other was a PR Racing National Number One Kit W/ updates for my lard ass!! 85 200x"s and 110's <I had a 79 tri-moto125 and at one point had four of them and a125m beat to s@#t!!>) for $250. Then I found an ex85 aracer left to die without powertrain, but it did have almost everything else on it. Including a +2.5 westcoast swingarm almost in mint contion it was a sweet deal for $100 bucks! SORRY GUYS AND GALS GOT TO GO! TOLIP!@@##$%&

tough post since im cheap. I have had 2 trikes that took my cash lol

250SX 6 years ago, full rebuild on EVERYTHING except motor. Differential rebuilt, every single brearing and bushing replaced everywhere. LOTS of work to re do this bike from the groud up with new plastics.

2600$ for an 85 250sx with a clarke gas tank and fresh maier plastics out front and rear.

on the 1983 250R: On my third engine build now, 300 honda line kit. With the big bore kit and related parts, with the 6 inch extended custom swinger ( 659$ shipped), I think Im in the 3,000$ range for the 300R.
