I have an 84 and a 85 Tecate. Its just something to be careful of. When working on my Tecates I have been known to wear my alpinestars to start it a lot. I have also jacked my toe on the foot peg too. It happens.
The timing could be off some as well, or carburetion. Does the bike start at all? Or does it just kick back? Is it stock, or ported, milled, carbed or?
Also, when I start mine I'll run it through a few times lightly (using my weight to cycle it) to get it to the top of the kicker throw, and give it a good kick. And kick with the arch of your foot, and not the toe area of your foot.

It was my bike, I wore steel toes or MX boots on her, I told you the trailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro would bite if you weren't careful.... turn your foot out bound a bit, and kick through like any dirt bike, and no, it has nothing special done to it other than new piston, rings, pin etc. and a very little bit of port work to smooth up the intake and exaust last time we were rebuilding it. I did rebuild the bottom end and re-shim it and put in new seals through the tranny, cowboy boots aren't the way to ride that thing bud. but I really hope you enjoy her. She was like any red head, a real blast to ride.
