hey guys im having a problem getting spark on my 1983 Honda 200x

I got the motor from a fellow 3ww member a few months ago and it had spark i saw it run.

I suspected my coil so i took off the connectors to clean them up and while i was doing that one of the two wires that gos to the coil touched the frame arced with a little spark

i hope this didnt damage anything what do you guys think? It cant been good :(

i cleaned up the connections and still no spark

Anyone got any ideas?

Ive looked over the entire harness and all the wire and connections are good

heres a picture showing the connector that acred off the frame

I think you should be ok, but it might have damaged the coil. It is a very common part and ther are tons of them out there. I have some parts for the machine and I know I have that. Let me know if I can help..

sounds stupid i know, but change the plug.seen it too many times not to be true.the coil was not most likely hurt by a momentary arc.

harryredtrike i tried changing the plug checked over the entire harness and inside the on/off switch all that stuff looks good

Dave's1985200X i checked the manual and it shows different readings for the cdi unit (ign module) after 1984

do you think this is important?

maybe why i dont have spark?

how do you test a coil othr than just switching it out for a known good one?

Try unplugging your on/off switch to see if that does anything. If your bike wasn't running with you pulled the wire to clean it, I can't see it arcing or causing any damage. Let me know how you make out.

hey Dave, thanks for replying to my post. Ill go try unplugging the switch right now and post my findings

im not sure how to explain the spark off that wire with the motor not running or spinning over it was perfectly still

what would have stored up energy?

maybe im just going crazy waiting to fire it up:confused:

check your primary ans secondary coils.thats where the arc was.you have a volt ohm meter i hope your primary should read .2-.8ohms and your secondary should have a reading between 3-5k ohms.your primarys are where your arc was the clip and the bottom post of your coil same side<front> and to check the secondary you test the coil post front bottom and your plug wire.this will only test your coil<where your arc was>.hope it helps.

I just tried unplugging the on/off switch and no beans

thanks harryredtrike im gonna have to wait till tomorrow to get my hands on a meter and check all the different areas shown for proper resistance I have a feeling its the coil everything worked when tapper hooked my up

Do you have another coil? If not send me a p.m. with your address and I'll mail you one :)

pm sent tapper :beer

ok guys Ive been doing some research and if I understand this correctly, a CDI (capacitive discharge ignition) is basically some sort of capacitor(cdi unit) and timer(pulse generator) for providing consistant high voltage spark.

is there a capacitor inside the cdi unit ? (little black box)

Did you ever have spark at your place? Check your ground wire to make sure you have a good ground. Recheck all your connections to make sure they are pushed all the way in and not broken at the connection spots. Let me know how you make out today, if still no spark, I'll sent you the black box, cdi and coil. Out of those three things you should get your spark. :wondering

test the exciter coil.

Hey Dave,

Thanks for all your continued efforts to help me get this 200x built. I couldnt have got this far without your help.

I havnt had any spark so far :(

I took a small piece of sandpaper and cleaned up the exposed ends on the coil and the frame where the harness grounds, no go.

Tonight I was able to get a meter and checked all the resistances between the leads against the specs shown in the manual.

Coil primary :

test - 1.0 ohms

spec - 0.2-0.8 ohms

Coil secondary :

test - 4 K ohms

spec - 3-5 K ohms

Exciter coil :

test - 147 ohms

spec - 100-400 ohms

pulse generator

test - 31 ohms

spec -

1983 - 30-200 ohms

after 1983 - 50-150 ohms

last but not least was the cdi unit ,i couldnt get resistance or infinity across any of the terminals :wondering

I also checked all the wires in the harness for continuity and all the wires and connectors were good

I guess the cdi units not workin, everything else was within spec except the primary circuit on the coil resistance was a little high. Im not sure if i should be concerned about that or not?
