what size rear rim/tires to run on my tecate

what size rear rim is everyone running on their sport trikes. right now i have some huge 22x12.25x10 tires on some 10x10 rims. i'm looking to get another set of rims for better speed and tires and keep these for the trail. just wondering what everyone's running with say a 20" tire. maybe like a 9" rim? any recommendations on rim tire size combo?

I run a 20x11x9 and i have no problems. Works for most any situations.

Well if you stay with 10 inch rims, it limits some of the tires you can find for the tecate. I did find me a sexy set of ITP C series Wheels and 20" Predator XCR-03 Holeshot tires. Not a big fan of holeshots, but the price I couldnt beat. Believe it or not, they actually do really well for moderate trail riding.

use them 10x10 rims and get some 18/10/10 Titan Fast Trekker tires

BEST tire for a trike IMO and many others have the same opinion

Handle GREAT and slide perfect.

Ive found the razr/holeshots have to much side bit for a trike unless they are like 50 percent worn or alike.

I love the look of 18's on 10" rims if you have that 4on 4" you can get itp wheels

I tried 18" fast trekkers on my 86 Tecate and there was not enough ground clearance for me. I like 20's or 22's on 10 inch rim. I'll never buy 18's again.
I use what I have and buy what's cheap.

I bought (2) 20" Kenda Gnarlys on ebay for $32 a piece from a local dealer. When I went to pick them up the manager tried to tell me it was only for one. So I demanded he look at the auction, and he got bummed out. Blamed it on the ebay guy they fired and had to eat it.

I currently have 20x11x10 Holeshots on mine. In my opinion Holeshots are a good all around-trail/pit tire, but not(!) a serious sideways tire. The size you should choose depends on how rough the area you're going to ride in.



I know I'm going back to an 18" tire ( grooved Carlisle Multi-Tracs)on a 10"wheel for flattracking and tearing up the yard .....so I don't have to mow as much this year, but mine won't be a trail rider. I'll get something else for that.

20" Holeshots on stock ('86)wheels: They actually measure 21" tall with 7lbs. of air in them.

I don't think you can run anything smaller than a 10" wheel due to the ridiculously large bolt pattern on the T3. For the woods a 20" tire on a 10" rim will work well. I've always run Turf Tamers and have had good luck with them.

ok i do have different hubs. i don't know what they are from but they are 4 on 4" and take a 1/2" fine thread nut for them. i would like to keep my current rims and tires for the trail and get another set for messing around, more speed, and to use on my buddies track he built in his back yard. i just want to be able to switch the rims/tires out depending on where i'm riding. my current tires bite really hard and don't slide around corners all that good. so i guess i'm almost looking for a track tire for sliding and accelleration. i think the 22's are slowing me down too.

22's are definitely too big. Your suspension isn't able to do its job with tires that bounce like basketballs. If you're looking for something for MX then I'd say a 18" Turfers or 18" Fast Trekkers. If you're not going to hit the woods with them then 10" rims will work but I think even for MX I'd rather have 8's or 9's. Oh, and you probably already know but a 4x4" is damn near exactly the same as 4x100mm so don't rule out a set of wheels with that bolt pattern.

so the 10's are not really good for trail riding? maybe i'll look into the 9's for trail tires and save the 10's for the track. what is a good trail tire that allow some slide as my current tires bite hard in everything.

Its not so much the rim size as the tire that's on it. A 20" tire on a 10" rim will probably be OK for the trails but I'd prefer an 8" or 9" for a little more breathing room. An 18" tire on a 10" rim will be awful in the woods and you'll smash the rim as soon as you hit a good rock.

I think the tread design of the Kenda Claw is much like a Fast Trekker.

If there is a wide variation in the type of terrain you ride then you can't go wrong with one of the tires with the "Holeshot type" tread on it. I'd go with a 4 or 6 ply since you said there's some rocks around.

I've seen lots of race pictures of Kenda Klaw XC tires on cross country Pro rider machines.

I've always wanted a set and lots of people recommend Fast Trekkers but they are 2-ply. Compare the 2 tires tread. One guy told me he runs the Fast Trekkers backwards so they act more like a paddle tire.

I live in MI and know all about the varying terrain. I ran a set of Maxxis Surtrack that were reversible for hard pack or sand. They worked well around here but were way too heavy.

got the rims and tires ordered. brought the order up to $300 to save the $50. went with the 9" rims and 20" tires along with some other goodies. went with the blaster rims since i have the 4 on 4 hubs. hopefully it works out for me. i have a line on some 18" fast trekkers to put on my 10" rims for the off trail use. trike looks nice mike. you should sell me that coolant over flow bottle.:lol:

They will work fine when you enlarge the holes in the wheels with a drill bit for the larger studs.

BTW, 1st Gen Tecates came with no coolant overflow bottle and are fine without it. No way said bottles for a 2nd Gen Tecate are worth the money they're going for.

rims worked out just fine. i love the look of the new rims and tires. took it for a little ride in some muddy conditions as it's been raining here for the past couple of days. the grip really good and i think they will work great on the trail. the fast trekkers are on the way for my 10" rims.

20's are a good compromise for trail use... 18's slide better but dont hook as well and have very little clearance and usually need regearing... 22's look stupid and handle like crap IMO... I would get 20's on 9" wheels... I like the appearance of 18's on 8" but there is very few places around here I could use them.. 10" wheels are damage prone.. I use them with paddles just because its what i have...

EDIT: I guess you already got 20's on 9's... good choice..
