What's going on, i been riding dirt bikes and atvs for a long time i never had a trike of my own until my father desided to give me his 84 tecate he no longer uses, i really wanna rebuild it but i dont have alot of money its actually in really good shape. The only problems im having is when i nail the gas it bogs down bad, my father said this was probablly the reed valves? When i put the choke all the way down the engine dies, and the petcock is broken, but usable. My father bought this trike brand new.

That one is definitely worth saving and fixing up.

The bogging can be caused by a lot of things. Dirty air filter, dirty carb/clogged jets, wrong jetting, electrical problems. I would suspect any of those before the reed valves actually. I'd recommend starting off by cleaning or replacing the air filter (Uni filters are cheap) and clean the carb. Check the jets closely to make sure they aren't clogged up at all. Replace if needed. New spark plug. Once all that stuff is done you'll be in a better position to trouble shoot it if it still isn't running right.

The leaking carb (possibly bad float needle valve or float problem) could cause a rich condition and your bogging.

The Tecate looks complete and mostly original. They can be fast and fun. Good buy.

The best way to do it is go through the normal steps for any Tecate you get.

1. Yes, check the air filter. make sure all airways are clean/open (no mice nests etc)
2. New spark plug.
3. Clean the carb. Take it apart completely and spray it all down with carb/choke cleaner
4. get some tool dip, clean the intake boot and coat the boot with the plastidip.

You do that, I'll bet you'll be good to go.

The lack of an air filter is your problem. Get a new one befor driving it anymore. With out the air filter it will not work right.

Needs a new stator? What a surprise.
