View Full Version : 200x Kicker gears....

Hey guy's got the new engine together and who knew the kicker gears are trailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro. When I had it running last fall they worked fine. Now that I have heavy valve springs, and a 10.25:1 comp piston in it the kicker teeth aren't liking it. Few questions, would new internal gears and a spring solve the problem or should I fire up the bridgeport and back cut the teeth so they are angled to grab into each other when they engage. Or would simply stiffening the spring that engages the teeth solve my problems? The teeth looked good when I had the cases split that's why I reused them. I think I am going to run it for the summer as long as it doesn't get any worse, that will give me some time to evaluate the situation and find a good solution. ...and I don't want to tear this mother apart again...

Thanks for the help if anyone has any advise.

A little heavier spring and back cutting the gears should solve the problems.

Sounds like I have work to do. You don't think a heavier spring alone won't fix the problem? And where do I find a stiffer spring for this guy, or am I just going to have to shim the spring with a washer?

i had the same problem with my 12:1 piston so i fixed the gears and got a goki starter too then i pulled it and made a auto x lol

use a head with the decomp lever.thats how my 200x is setup and i have no problem kicking it over.

When I took mine apart the teeth didnt look rounded and gears looked good but it turns out they werent. I took it back apart I cut a spare spring from another kicker gear in half and put it in there. It hasnt sliped yet and that was last summer. As long as the teeth are not rounded, this will work.

Thank you sir! This is good to know as mine looked nice and sharp like new so I figured they were good to go.

And Lee the decompression part is just in the rocker box cover right? Do you know what models had these that will fit on the 85 200x? That would be the easiest fix at this point.

I thought the 200M and 200S had the decomp lever in the head....?? Not my models though so it's a guess. I'd look at parts on EBAY or start a new thread on the decompression lever......

On a side note, I had an 85R with slipping gears. Back then, I was broke and 125$ in parts was allot! I was very disappointed when I got the new gears because they too did not have the sharpness I felt they would being new.

But, for whatever reason, they did fix the issue. I just thought I'd see teeth as sharp as knives!!

I think allot of that <85 200X issue is the spring itself. But, don't go overboard. A strong engagement spring will also bump off those good edges on the gears as it slips back on by on the upstroke.

Problem is, that all your stuff is internal and tough to get at.

DADS did claim to have figured out what shim he felt worked well. I'd PM him and see if the ones that got modded are still working well.

And if that spring alone can be bought new, I'd grab one up!

Good luck  Thats one of Honda's worst designs..........

I've got a 200e head in my shed that has a decompression lever. If you need it let me know, i let it go very cheap.

never said the 200x cam with a decomp lever.i said that's how mine is set up.according to babbits all this models should have the same head with a decomp lever.

Thank you Lee that clears up that issue. Now I need to hit the local junk yard and ebay.

Does the decomp lever make it that much easier to kick over? I just got mine back together yesterday with a bore and Wiseco. I can get it started but only if I get a smooth fast kick on the exhaust stroke. If it's on the compression stroke, forget about it. Sometimes it also seems like it binds. My shin is bruised and swollen today :(

mine has a wiseco and also a xr200r cam.with the decomp lever it is easy enough for my gf kick.

Maybe I will give it a try. I have a valve cover from an 81 185s that has a decomp lever. So it's not a big deal that the cam wear won't match the lobe wear?
