My kicker constantly slips on my latest 250r I purchased-I have a couple questions pertaining to the gears and "washers" as stated in parts fiche-I took the side cover off and found that I am missing 2 washers on the shaft for the outside bigger gear-theres a spacer that fits on the shaft that I assume is to hold the gear back on the shaft between the side case and the crankcase-missing those 2 "washers" (which go on either side ofthe spacer)as it states in the parts fiche cause the gear to move ever so slightly?thus causing the slippage?I took the gears out, the tips of the teeth are rounded over but it appears to be made that way and not from kicking-I have searched here and found some are replacing the 85 gears with 86's and the spring too-but which spring the main return spring or the thinner smaller one which is next to the starter gear?Would the missing 2 washers(I think they are spacers myself)on the main shaft be the culprit or should I just replace both gears???
Any help is appreciated---

The later 250R motor did not have the washers, just a spacer.

I recommend you get yourself 2 new gears and the small spring, you'll be good to go as long as the shaft isn't too worn.....

WOW, thats great to know-I would have never know that-why did they omit them in the later models?
I ordered the gears and spring today from SERVICE HONDA hopefully they will be the trick-I have pictures of the gears but they are too big to download here-and honestly I am so computer stupid I'll never get them right-is it easy to do?

^ for the price, it's best to just change them!!

These are some of the parts people "assume" are discontinued but IDT they are GONEZO just yet...... :D

Did it run you just about 110$?? Service Honda has the best pricing and service all around. I had a great guy @ Western Honda that saved me another 5/10% over Service Honda but he got chit-canned and left the building. And with that, I lost the savings and have been with S.H. ever since........

I have a set of NOS gears I bought on a BIN for a decent price when I had an R. I'll hang onto them until they get discontinued.

Couple new gears and the spring and it'll be chicken for ya :)...........

Take care..........

hmm, the smaller gear was like 26 bucks my price and the larger gear was 108 my price(I get a discount from my affiliation with the POOA board(pilot odyssey owners association)so alittle higher than your prices-thats from SERVICE HONDA as well.;)

the 88/89 used different gears, shafts, clutch cover and related parts. The 88/89 had a "shoulder" on the shaft and kinda a "spacer" built-into the clutch cover. I'm guessing the spacer and washers got lost and honda wanted to do away with them. I got 2 motors that were missing the spacer and washer. As for the kicker gears, 85 gears weren't strong enough and slipped/stripped easy. I changed 3 of mine to 86/87 gears and one of my friends. It can be kinda confusing, because 85-87 showed the same part number, BUT they are different.
