View Full Version : 185s Question / Choke / Idle

I spent 2 hours searching through the forums, looking for someone
with similar problem could not find a thread with the exact same issues
that I was having.

Have a 83 185s
-Newly Rebuilt Carb
-K&N Filter inside Factory Air Box
-P&K Style Performance Exhaust
-Factory sized Jets #98 Main / #38 Idle
-Needle on Middle Notch
- Air/Fuel out 2-1/4 Turns
- New NGK factory sized plug
- Intake has no Cracks
- New O-Ring Seals on Carb and Cylinder Side

As far as any performance mods to the engine,
big bore kit, etc. etc. I have no idea, guy I bought
it from didn't know either.

Problem I'm having, can only get it to idle
with choke on first notch, after I warm engine
up and shut choke off engine will die unless I
keep giving it gas, have been running it around
with choke on first notch, about 2/3 to WOT
sputters around but its drivable.

From Cold start, with choke on first notch, engine
will fire right up first pull, engine idles great, can
adjust idle up and down with the adjustment screw.

Any Ideas, main jet too small ??

I had same trike and it must have been a twin by the sounds of your problem! My problem ended up being main jet was actually to large! Make sure it has the #85 jet in it as mine was larger. There was also an optional #78 for the High altitude bike you may have in?? Not sure.... My 185 also had a 200 head on it with k&n and a pipe. Good luck

OK, I'm really confused.

Where are you quoting this #85 main jet from, is
this factory jetting ?

Everything I have seen indicates that factory
jetting for an 83 185s is #98 / #38 which my carb has in
it currently.

Other years 81 95/38 82 92/38 or 100/38

98 or 100 main with a 38 pilot is what the manuals say for factory setting. I think Crazy70Man is saying an 85 main is what he found worked best for him, not what the factory setting was. Trial and error.

Which KEIHIN main jet series do I need to be buying to change out the factory one. ?

is supposed to me 1+1/4-1+1/2 turns out
this coudl be your issue. turn it it till it stop s (do not jam on it) and them turn it out 1 and 1/4 turns.
next change the plug to a new one
try the throttle and see what happens. if it idles and doe snot die, your low end is ok. you can go to 1/4 turn more and final setting at 1 and 1/2 turns out. but no more or u can have issues.

on the needle set it to 1 lower than middle, this will pull it out of the hole more giving you more fuel. in the mid range. this is where your probelbt getting some stumbling and leaning.
