Those are some slick looking rigs, but does anyone have a 500R with inverts? Hmmmm... Maybe....LOUIS MEILKE? Oh, and I got to ride it:D Lemme tell you Lou's rig is incredibly snappy, & handles really nice (nice for a 5 minute rip around the yard!!), the rear shock is a little stiff, but all in all, man that thing is a monster & will kill you if you're not careful! I'm kinda REALLY glad the ground was so soft & the rears weren't hooking up too well(this was in a large back yard) or I'd have been shot off the trike! LOL. Louis is all modest about what he's created, but I think it's pretty frikkin' cool...

The inverts are nice but its just another bike. I've still got plenty of gremlins to work out but I'm proud to say its come a long way.

Trust me it's just as much if not MORE work than using a atc250r frame. Billy's working on doing atc frame conversions. I would talk to him if you really want a 500r.

To be frank, just a decent built puma motor will run away from a 500 powered trike. To this day, I have never seen a fast 500 powered trike/quad. They are a good and fun motor, but they are not a race motor....they dont rev. Dont waste your time on building one with the thought of beating everybody, cause you will be disappointed.

Yeah, the puma can be faster blah blah. Rev higher, blah blah blah.

That's all fine and dandy but there's a stigma about a 500. Trust me when I hear someone say CR500 I get shivers and goose bumps. Not so much when I hear or read about a "puma 250r".

Let's face it. The puma cylinder is awesome. Great design, makes more hp, revs out nice, blows by the guys on the 500s I'm sure. wooh hooh, extra hooh even.
I didn't build a 500 to beat everyone, nor do i like it cause "it revs to the moon"
I like it causes its got tractor like torque and a 500 engine can be had for a measely $800 bones ready to roll.

You've got to admit, the HP to $$ ratio is lucrative.

I hear this 250R based/CR500 arguement kinda often...I'm not convinced. The one year at TF, I think it was 06, or maybe it was 07? There was Cory and Andrea on their 370cc alcohol drag trikes. They were FREAKIN fast no doubt...BUT, my 500 (Well tuned though, I'll admit :D) ran right with them hand in hand and beat Andrea twice out of the 5 or 6 times we raced. Everything else was dead nuts close. Dollar for HP, I dont think you can go wrong with a 500 motor.

CPI builds the Puma, along with the Cub and Saber's....

Anyways, I agree about pricing, hard to beat the 500 in that matter. A 431 puma cylinder that is plated goes for about $1300 with piston. This is not a ported or ready to roll cylinder by no means. However, tq ratings vs a 500 is very close. If you like the short thrill of a tq motor with 5 gears, then a 500 is for you. If you like the way your 250R runs up the RPM's, and keeps pulling and you have a little more money, look at the Puma. I would not recommand a saber unless you are an all out drag racer.

Whenever I race, more times then not, first thing out of their mouth is, "Is that a 500?"...so Louis I agree with you, there is quite a presiage feeling knowing you have 500cc's under your butt. I have raced a few 500 powered trikes, and a number of CR500's.....not even close. I love powered machines, and the 500R in a trike is a cool site.

I do have to admit. It was freakin impressive what they where doing with only 370cc. It was definitely more than a run for the money.

OK,,, ok,,, ok,,, i got the chance to ride cory blakesley's alky 370 when they came to gordons this year,,, it was a fast ride for sure... with all the traction even in the fine dry sand it was a handful to get out of the hole... it needed about 6 more inches on the swinger,,, if we would have lined up i think it would have been pretty close,, the difference in powerbands was like jumping on a 125 vs the 500,,, way more rpm's and alot less torque but when you start getting close to the cc's of a 500 with a 250r based motor what is the difference besides transmission? and why would a 250r based 500cc motor rev more?

My take on the CR500 vs Modded 250R is the fact that the transmission on the 500 is NOT going to give you trouble. The 250R is having to cope with 2 - 3x the HP of the stock 250R. Sure, Honda typically has a high FS (Factor of Safety) but 100 to 200% stress loads over stock are not going to be good long term.

TQ vs HP the 500 comes out on top due to displacement. All this "it has TQ but no RPM" is nonsense. If you have TQ, gear it to use it. You don't need RPM to be fast. Let me talk to you about some 10 and 11 second diesel trucks these days that never see 3500 RPM....

The only drawback I see to the CR500 is getting the kicker sorted. Folks don't like having to mess with that and I believe there's a good initiative on this very forum to make the CR500 conversion a forward kick.

Combine Billy's excellent pre-made ATC500 frame service with the almost finished forward kick mod.... and man, why go any other route? You are done for life on the HP needs for all but the most serious of serious drag racers.

I bet Billy could have that forward kick as a frame option during build too...Just a thought for your there Bill... Prime'n ya for when it's my turn to order up a frame from you. :)

huh? I may be missing something, but isn't the CR500 conversion meant to be used with the whole engine/trans set up? CAll me a moron, but just asking.

Anyway, who had that sweet kickstart set up that return geared the kick start to make the 500 kick forward?

Side note, My interest in the 500 is because of my weight. I can care less about going fast. Yes, I know the first inclination is to go 4 stroke. But you can't beat the feel and sound of the 2 stroke. Talk about fun!

the kicker issue is easy.

i made a flip seat and kick backwards. i can start my bike without ever getting off. no trick expensive parts and no problems.

If you are building a rider and long term distance/reliability are factors a 500 is the way to go with its beefier components in the bottom end which were designed to handle the kind of hp/tq a big bore motor puts out.

There is alot of potential in 500 motors for drag only use but you have to find the right builder to set you up which can be tough because not many know how to make a 500 run hard. And very few venture in that area because most riders are overwhelmed with stock 500 output anyway. The main hinderence is most off shelf aftermarket pipes are too small to extract maximum hp.

Louis, I have no agreement with any of this, nor do I wish too, as I have said, the "theory" of the 500 is what people want because of its number.

I have seen CR500 in a drag chasis with CR ignition. It was a 540+ alky buring machine...running 4.5's......that's not very fast:acr

You'll have to get with Jason Hall - he is the only one I know that has done a 350X based modern thumper trike.

The only thing i can find is from a few years ago someone swapped an aftermarket 400ex cdi.

I'm looking for the entire electrical swap from another bike.

Heres mine before I changed it. It is a 89 cr500,250r front end, Custom swinger, stock 500 linkless rear shock. Ridden primarily on alky at the drags. But , have taken it to Glamis, and Silverlake, for some sand blasting action.

I know. they just think because they've got the big bore dual pipe banshees that they can smoke a two stroke of half the size but they just can't. two strokes are the way to go for power.

But ive got a line on a 91 or 88 cr500 complete which motor is goin to be the one to chose for the build
