I was just looking at a few pics. from one of our New England rides and came across this one of 2 86 350X's and my 85 If you look at the header pipes, mine is the odd ball,, What kind of coating is that on my pipe?, I'm thinking about taking it off of there and going with some high temp paint.... what do you think?

Looks like a nice coating of rust... :D

that jet coat stuff is the way to go.. But I just clean up as much dirt/rust as possible and hit it with the hi temp bbq paint. it usually holds up for a month or two.. then I rinse and repeat. :)

It appears to be powdercoated in "RUST"

Blast it and powdercoat it or get a 400EX headpipe, modify it a bit and have a ball.....

Well seeing that we have some people that have never seen this type of a coating before, and some need binoculars, and some just think it's rust! Here are some close up shots of it.. It's deffinately some sort of coating.. It's been on there since iv'e had it and never just washed off when I clean it

In one of the pics I used some steel wool on it to see how much of a PITA it was going to be to get it off of there... In some areas you could rub your fingers over it and it just falls off.. Must've been put on there quite a long time ago.. Oh by the way do you need binoculars to see this ,,i,, j/k The pipe underneath is in really good shape, so, I'm just gonna strip it the best I can and hit it with some high temp paint or, I'll have DC powder it

My bad, it's rust AND mud cooked on there

Maybe I could powdercoat in mud? say 400 degrees for 20 minutes?? :D

It's very possible but, I find it very hard to believe, for the simple fact that The bike was always riden on beach sandy trails, down Cape Cod Ma. but who knows, anything is possible

I'd get it jet hot coated. its the only way to go. they do the best ceramic. The powdercoat is useless compared to that stuff and I even do my own powder. Definitely recommend the jet hot.

dirt, rust, mung, crap....i bet a bit of everything is on it...lol

if i remeber right the last time my buddy had his 350x system jet coated it was in the upper $100...powder is cheap and will last a few years till you need to redo it.

heres a pic of my powder coated header

edit.....just to be clear you need the high temp PC

Thanks for all of the input guys, it's appreciated, I just spent a good 15-20 minutes with a wire wheel on my cordless drill trying to get that crud off of there.. I would have never of thought it was just mud baked on there at all, seeing that I wash it after every ride i go on..

I'll sandblast it, fix the mucked up threads and PC it for you in flat hi temp black PC; to me the shiny exhaust PC never lasts thru the heat cycles and I've been using "Smooth HT black". I may have to chop off the one bad guard post and braise/MIG a new one on for you.

I'll try and keep the cost down the best I can and PC it for about 50$ complete/done/100%..... I really try my best to be reasonable for all you guys

Let me know, I have other guys wanting stuff done and I don't want to take on too much if I go back to work.

We ought to reinforce that swinger and maybe build some better skid mounts too. You've got it all apart, now is the time to do it.....

By now, we ALL know what will eventually fail so my thought is always, WHY WAIT FOR THE INEVITABLE!! :D

I've been thinkin about looking into this. wouldn't hurt to just ask for an estimate. It's supposed to hold up very well.

http://www.jet-hot.com/headercoatings.html

Might be even cheaper if you got someone local. the $5 can of bbq paint is almost too good to pass up tho. :D

^ PC is even less than that if you have a local buddy :D If your gonna prep it all anyhow, I think PC is a good inexpensive choice. It would take better than an hour to wire wheel that thing and you'd miss plenty of nooks and crannies. Only to have it looking like crap in a year or so....

The problem is the shops that are nailing you guys 30-50$ for even small items. The more you give them the cheaper it gets..... But getting it sandblasted is the most important part, then at least it's prepped and easy to clean up when you have the time and $$.

I would think the mud and crud wouldn't stick to the PC or JC as bad as it does the bare metal. mine looks the same as tanks tho..

what did they use from the factory? anyone know?

Hey tanks,

It turns out that my old 350x (yeah I owned one, and I used the oil filters that I gave you in it...you know, the ones that you said didnt work...and werent the right size, and you installed wrong and blamed it on my filter...) had the same special super rare coating on the header too...
