View Full Version : Code's 110ATC Restore
Hello, long time luker, couple time poster haha. This weekend I started to restore my 1984 110ATC. This was the same trike that I rode as a kid. Want to restore it to as close to new as possible. Plan on using it as a camp/neighborhood putt putt rig :D
My brother and I believe that when it was parked there was a no-spark issue. Going to have to sort that out but I want a clean trike to work on so i'll be really cleaning it up before I start. I am going to remove the entire wiring harness, bench test it, and fix anything that it needs.
Anyway here's my progress!
Barn fresh condition, minus a couple rodent buddies that I killed last night

Think I can patch that front tire

My brother and I both had 110's...this is the only one left but I do have some extra plastic

After a couple of hours of work

During the dissasembley I did find that the front motor mount was cracked. Fortunrely I can weld that up pretty easy. The only part that i'm going to have figure out structure wise is this rear motor mount. The cast mount has broken. Any suggestions on how to fix this? I can't weld cast. Thought about expoxing in a new section of mount to support this part of the engine. Just a thought at this point, don't know the best way to fix it.

Pretty good progress for a few hours

Just finished restoring my 110. Not sure what to do about that broken mount. I'm sure someone will chime in with a great idea. Good luck. Keep us posted.

You could try JB Weld. Or you could just get a different case. I have a 110 also but for now, its just parked. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it.
Yeah, I think that the ultimate fix will be to get a new case for it. I was thinking last night though that I could grind off the bad part of the mount. Then use a small section of tube welded to a plate and JBWeld that all onto the case. The plate would give more surface area for the JBWeld to hold on to and spread the load. May work for a time.
I need to finish removing the fork, then pull the wiring harness out...maybe tonight.
If you noticed in the background of those pics my main project is a solid axle swap on a 93 explorer. I HAVE to get it finished soon so that's my priority...for now :naughty:
Update:
It's not ALOT but I did get the fork removed and the wiring harness out of the trike last night. The butt connectors were pretty tight so I had to soak them in PBlaster for a little while but they all poped out without damage. I did find a broken ground wire on the headlight. Could that cause a no spark issue? Probably not but it's something that will be fixed.
I'm going to try to bench test the entire harness this weekend and replace anything that it needs. Fortunately I found a service manual for it on here so i'll also be testing the coil, and condenser. Tonight if I have time i'm going to work on stripping the frame of all paint and 25 years worth of grime. It's still very solid, no major rust at all!
Here's a question. The wheels are pretty rusty (surface only). I'm going to break them apart and sand them but what kind of paint matches the factory finish closely? Would silver rustoleum work well?
Thanks to all!

I am wondering this as well. I have used silver spray paint in the past and it looks alright but it is too shiny. They almost need to be like a matte or satin gray. I guess in between primer and silver lol.
Rob
Hmm...i'll see what I can find any post a pic of the results. What about the red? Is there a spray that's close to it? I do plan on wet sanding the tank and forks to make it look better.
Thanks for the help!

:welcome: to the boards - agree totally with your policy of keeping as close to stock as possible, got any :pics: :pics: :pics: ?
Ok guys, I disappeared for awhile didn't I. I was very very busy finishing up the suspension on my offroad truck this summer and didn't get much done with the atc. I did however get it all started again today. As noted above I completed disassembly last spring. Next step it is to get to work with the wire wheel and sand paper. It took me a couple of hours today but I was able to get the frame and the skid plate cleaned up and painted. The skid plate had seen to abuse so I did spend a bit of time with it and my ball pein hammer getting it back into shape.

Not too long after I had disassembled the trike I was able to clean and paint one wheel. I used Rustoleum Metallic gray paint. I think it really did a good job approximating the factory finish. They're pretty dusty, they've been sitting the the corner of my garage for a few months haha.

I've been reading up on plastic repair as well. I think i'm going to using a plastic welder (or soldering iron) to repair my original plastics. From what I've read I should be able to make a good repair and blend it in pretty good with a bit of sanding. Well see, i have two sets of plastics so I'll practice on the worse of the two before I really commit to that.
Oh I have a question too! Where can you find new decals for these? I probably just need to search huh haha.
I am going to sand down all the plastics, tank and fork. From what I understand Massy Ferguson tractor paint is very close to the honda red. And cheap too :)

Where can you find new decals for these?
Maybe eBay or Dillon Brothers (http://www.powersportspro.com/pages/parts/viewbybrand/default.aspx).
Did you get the crankcase sorted out? I'm sure any 90/110 ATC or CT motorcycle case would work, maybe even the 125?
No I haven't figured much out for that. I think that once I get everything put back together and running i'll start looking for a new case.
I'm going to start on the rear axle assembly tomorrow I think. Hopefully I can get it cleaned and painted up. Then I can finish up the wheels. Then the hard part...redoing the wiring harness

Then the hard part...redoing the wiring harness
Would it be easier to get a new one? I've got one but it's off an older machine ('77) so I'm sure everything is different. Deepa
Yeah I'm sure that it is. I've been wanting to get a better understanding of wiring so it should be a good project. If I can't get it to work i'll go ahead and get a new one. I downloaded a service manual for this trike last night so I should be able to trouble shoot everything.

is a 77 case the same as the 84? I have a complete engine
Not really sure if they're the same. I may have to look into it:)
I also found decals at atcheaven, very cool :D
A little while ago I stepped out to the garage and shot the other side of the frame. It's looking a whole lot better!

I usually hang my frame from a wire and paint it all at once.
Let me know about the case. I can disassemble it just for the side case if need be.
Cool thanks man :)
I was going to do that but once the time came I think I spaced it hahaha.
Been thinking about it more and more and i'm still going to go for as close to stock as possible...but want a flat track feel to it as well. It's gonna be awhile until I get to that point though. I found a bunch of 70 flat track trikes but not many 110's, anyone do this to the 110's?

I forgot all about them. I've got a bunch of trike links on my laptop but the motherboard died and I can't access the hard drive in it. Deepa
I've been reading a lot about painting. I have two sets of fenders. Both have cracks and are old. I figure that I can use a plastic repair kit to fix the cracks. Then I can sand it down so it blends in. I'd like to paint them to go a step forward. What would you guys recommend? Plastic is probably going to be the last thing I do so i'm not in any kind of hurry here. The rustoleum sunset red will probably crack as soon as there's any flex in the fender wouldn't it? Any tips here would be great. Thanks guys :D

haha ok here you go :D
It's got around 6"s of lift, d44/9" out of a 79 f150, full spool in the rear, will have a locked front as well. I still need to mount my winch and re do the steering. It's currently got the stock junk on it. I'm going to replace it with 1.5x0.25" DOM and heims.

That's better than rushing it and taking it out on the road to have it come apart and hurting yourself or others in the process. While I don't much care for Exploders (Cherokees are my top SUV), that one has the right stance to make it look good. Are you doing custom bumpers? I like the idea of the receiver holes front and back with the winch mounted on a removable plate.
Yeah I don't like to rush anything...but this one took like 3 years though. It's nothing special, I just drug my feet on it. I would like to build new bumpers for it, especially the rear. Do you have a trail rig?

hey code, the pm doesnt have the pic attachment, like posting does, so here you go that was when i had my 36" swampers on it... Now it has 33" bfg :( I have some 35" mastercrafts that im gonna put on, then when i get enough money, im wantin to go to 38s or 40s oh and its got a 429 cobra jet in it, all msd, itll roast the tires, and pull the fronts up if it grabs:naughty:
Weird, sorry about that. I had 31" Mastercraft Coursers on the explorer before the axle swap. They were good tires, wore very well and worked good on the trail. Nice bronco. I love that body style and it sounds like it has some power!! :D

hey if you ever need any parts for your 110 pm me i got a parts bike and will sell parts for cheap :)
I noticed your post in the classified section. Do you have the throttle cable (including the carb slide) and a gas cap? If so how much ya want? Lemme know! :)
Ok, I don't have any pics right now but I finished tearing down the rear end and painted it. I just need to clean up the axle with the a flap wheel and I can throw it all back together. Once that's finished i'll start putting everything back on the frame. :D
My 83' ATC 110 had the same issue, the front motor mount cracked. Luckily the 83' model has a removable one and I just bought another. Good luck welding it! Be careful.

you need to put a 125 cam in it, i've got a good one, from a 125 that grenaded
Yeah once I get it running I will probably put a cam in it. I already tossed the stock air box so i'll be replacing that with a K&N filter. Not sure what else I can do to the engine to get a little more power.

A flap wheel is a little aggressive. Use a wire wheel.
No pics (too cold) but I got the rear end tore down last weekend, painting, and put back together. I need to find a new seal for it but it should be ok even after I get it running for awhile at least.
I need to soak the run/light switches in in pblaster so I can take them apart to fix up the contacts. Then I can start bench testing the harness. Hopefully my no-spark issue is just a bad wire.
BTW, if anyone has a throttle cable (with slide, carb cap and spring) as well as an 84 gas cap they want to part with lemme know :D
Ok been a while since I updated my thread. I have gotten the front fork sanded down and painted. I unfortunately touched it with my work glove and must have gotten grease on it. I didn't realize that till after I shot it with another coat of red  So it looks like I get to do some more sanding and then repaint tomorrow. Oh well. I also bench tested my wiring harness. Fortunately everything except the head light and tail light check out! I also took apart the run/light switch and cleaned/tested it :Bounce: I sure do hope that my no spark issue was a bad plug/plug wire! I also have the rear end totally reassembled, mounted, and the foot brake is connected.

good luck with reassembly.make sure to get pics up when finished
I got my fork re-sanded and shot it with some paint again, so far so gook this time haha. Also cleaned up the wiring harness and found a burn wire. After fixing it I have a circuit to the tail light! I also found a spare head light harness so it looks like my harness is solid from stem to stern. I also went ahead and put the harness in and started to degrease the engine. Pretty good progress. Hope I can get it running!
Ok got more cleaned and painted tonight. I cleaned and painted the engine, foot peg bracket, head light bracket, and completed the fork. I'm going to take my two remaining wheels into the tire shop to have the beads broke. I did the first one myself...I don't think I want to go through that again lol. I also took the carb apart and have it soaking in injector cleaner. I blew out the valve so I know it's good. The jets need a good long soak before they'll be good to go though. I need to get some pictures. Once I get it put back together i'll post some up. :D
I do have one question. Is there anywhere I can get new ball bearings for the front end? I think I them all but I may not. I'd prefer a common brick and mortar store...then I can justify taking half a day from work lol
I got the engine mounted and everything wired up. I wanted to see if by some off chance I had spark so I took the plug out put it on the block and gave it a pull. I GOT FIRE! The broken wire I found must have been the cause of my no fire condition.
Anyway here's a pic...my camera is on it's last leg I think
http://www.rrorc.com/gallery/data/500/0052.JPG
I got the fork put on tonight as well as the handle bars and run/light switch. I also started inspecting the carb which has been soaking in injector cleaner for a couple days. The gum is starting to loosen up a good bit. I took the jets out and used the compressor to blow some air though them and they are flowing. Going to let them soak for a couple more days before I put it back together. Tomorrow i'm going to throw some bolts, nuts, misc hardware into the gas tank and try to break loose any scale. Hopefully I can find some tank coat this weekend then I can try to get it started :)
I was bored so I snapped a pic :)

Yes, it does.
Since I got spark, and and my carb is doing well i'm starting to think about my plastics. I've read many threads on here about sanding them down to restore the color. My problem is that I have cracks in both the front and rear fenders. I know I can frankenstich them but I really don't want to. I want to weld the plastic. I know it's not going to absolutely perfect and look like a factory fresh piece. But the welding along with a good polish should look pretty darn good. I've read up on how to do it and it seems easy enough. I have a spare set of plastics for extra filler as well so i'm good on all sides...cept for the welder. I have a small soldering iron but it just won't be up to the task. I looked over on harbor freight and found this welder. Has anyone used this? Just seeing if any of you have a review. It's cheap as hell but I don't want to buy something that's total junk and won't make it through one job.

I've read that you can fit a 1/4 piece of tubing on the front of a heat gun to concentrate the heat and use that. Never tried it myself but it sounds like it will work.
I picked up a plastic welder today. It's the cheap hf one I had in that link. Honestly it's a pos...but it is doing the job. The only real probably i've had so far is the tip is wanting to bend when i'm applying much pressure to it. Anyway I started welding up the front fender. It's going ok. The welder came with filler rods which I used on the underside of the fender where no one can see it. I then compared both sets of rear fenders I have and determined which set is the best. Unfortunately the winner was repaired in the past with metal flashing and bolts. I'm going to see what it'll take to remove the old repair and fill in the holes. I have plenty of scrap fender plastic so we'll see what I can do. Once I get everything fixed up i'm going to sand the fenders down to restore the color.
A couple days ago I put my carb back together and put it back on the engine. I got a new (to me) throttle from yt125man. I need to lube it up a bit. I also pulled the tank out of the corner of the garage. I'm going to get some more sand paper tomorrow and start repainting it. I need to find some tank coating but i'll get to it. After that some new fuel line, filter, tires and an air filter and it should be up and running

So you a mudder or a rockcrawler?
I set it up for Indiana trails which will have many offcamber tight sections with rock, tree roots, and a little mud. No going "mudding" for me though, and I probably will avoid going on normal trails after a good rain to avoid as much of it as possible. I don't like what mud does to vehicles.
Been awhile since I updated my resto thread. That HF plastic welder is a pos, the tip started to bend on me when it heated up and I was working the plastic. I used the "rods" that came with it on my front fender. I have only done the underside of the fender but it worked pretty good. I'm going to use some old honda plastic to work on the visible side. I have some sand paper to smooth it all back down and polish it. Hopefully i'll be able to get it looking half way decent. I'd have some more progress if it weren't so dang cold. I just can't motivate myself to do out and freeze after work haha. I did find tires though at wally world. Just old school knobby's :D

Ahh got ya... I have a Jeep Cherokee with a 3" mild lift... after said n done its gonna be at 5.5" and 35"s ,Gonna get Long Arms because short arms are killing me right now on the flex. Yea mud really sucks. I use to play in it. not so much any more. and for off camber I was about 2" from laying mine over... just my drivers side tires were touching the ground.. talk about scary feeling. I enjoy that but just not im my DD... talk about pucker factor lol

I LOVE lifted trucks!! :beer
Too bad all our local land is gone now (with foreclosed homes there) aside from whats in NH.
We had pits everywhere in MA when I was 20 years younger (insert depressed sign here........)
What r ya gonna do?? Life goes on.........
Glad you all like the expo :D It was a lot of work, still got some to do but i'm pretty happy with it!
Got a question about trike tires now. I'm thinking about going with 18" or 20" turf tamers. I've been searching around for quite awhile now and haven't found too many examples. How would these look? I know that the ride would be worse with these. But i'm just going to bombing around the subdivision and using the 110 to cart myself around camp. My goal is to annoy my neighbors as much as possible so sliding around corners holds a pretty big appeal hahahhaha
Oh yeah I got a jug of muratic acid a couple weeks ago to fix my tank. We found a spare tank and cap at my parents a couple weeks ago so now I get to clean them up :)
I got the tire off the front wheel today, split the wheel, sanded it down and shot it with some paint. Started working on the plastic again too. Unfortunately my plastic welder's tip broke off so i'm going to have to try to fix it or just get something better. I worked on the the visible side of the cracks. It's going pretty decent all in all. I filled in one crack and sanded it down till it was pretty much flush with the original plastic. I am pretty much set on painting the plastic. Unfortunately there are spiderweb cracks throughout the plastic. I need to do a big of research before I jump to that though. The rest of the trike has gotten the rattle can treatment. I didn't just spray bomb the hell out of it though. I need to read up on the krylon fusion paint and how to prep it so it'll stick good. We'll see :)
After a little reading i'm going to follow all the prep steps outlined in 300rmans painting thread http://www.3wheelerworld.com/showthread.php?t=81976 Any thoughts? Tips?
