View Full Version : i think i might need to do a top end job on my 82 R

Hey i was wondering wut all do i need for a top end job as far as parts go and etc. ANd do u think i could do it by my self with just the owners manual becuz i have never done a top end job but still i need to know wut i need to get for a top end job.

hey, are you going to install a bigger piston? If your cylinder walls are scared then you need to bore it to atleast .10 over. if not then you might be able to hone it. but you need a complete piston kit, that includes piston, rings, bearings, clips, and gaskets. if you need to bore then you have to take the cylinder to a machine shop to have it bored. As far as installing it, be CURTAIN that the piston is in the right direction and that the rings are properly gaped and that when you put cylinder over the piston that the pistons are seated correctly. and then all you have to do is break in the rings with a couple of rides. you do that by first let motor run until warm, and then shut it off and let it cool off completely, and then start it and ride it not to hard but get it warm again, then shut off and let it cool again, and do that about a couple of times and towards the end rap it out for just a few seconds to slimulate your riding style.

Thats it, if you do it yourself, be sure EVERYTHING is correct otherwise it will cost you $$.
