I get a phonecall from a buddy in Seattle. A 1985 Big Red in Marysville (10 miles from me) for 50.00. Clear paperwork, the kickstarter seems to slip, new tires on it, spare set of good rear tires, winch for the front rack, needs a seat. This pan and foam are junk! I'll post pics in the morning. I just got to work so they have to wait.

some idiot put a sudco carb on this thing....way too big for it. I'll be reinstalling the stock carb along with a thumb throttle. Anyone want a twister for a BR?

yes, all the "new" plastic is maier. The front rack was rebuilt to take the winch that they never mounted. I'll check here in a bit to see if the winch works.

The engine turns over with the electric starter when the jumpers are hooked straight to the starter. I need to look for the wiring problem so it works correctly. I have the stock carb coming apart to go into cleaner so I can bolt it on.

I pulled the kehin carb off of it. It is a PWK. I'll measure it so I know what I have then most likely put it on ebay.

That's not the stock seat pan. 85-87 had plastic pans so it should be easy to find a good seat.

I'm going to just work on cleaning the engine (oven cleaner) and cleaning the carb in the morning. I want to hear it run before I buy the one way clutch.

Doesn't look bad for $50. You need to get some 25" tires on there, those 22"s look tiny! Be sure to check the rear end oil as the 85's were known to get water in there from a poorly sealed driveshaft boot.

they are 25", and they have 3 pounds of air in them. They are Duros so I bet the rollout is a bit small.

I got one free once. It needed bearings in the rear axle. I got it running and rode it a little. My grandfathers BigRed that is in good shape, needed a electric starter and my bigred became the donor bike for a couple of years then we pulled the motor out of it and the rear axle off of it. and we put the motor in a metal 55 gallon drum with a lid to keep it out of the weather and we hauled the frame for scrap. The motor was in that metal drum for about two years and apparently the drum leaked and filled with enough water to get into the motor and froze it solid and it was a real good running motor. on the next scrap run, the motor went on it. I still have some of the rear axle parts left of it though.

maggies, that looks like a 250r carb. know the diameter of the boot side?

It runs!!!!

I took my 350X carb off the shelf and bottle fed it fuel, and it started and sipped nearly a cup of fuel. I shut it down when I noticed fluid dripping down onto the spark plug. It burned off right away so it isn't oil. I'll run it again tommorrow and see if it just might have been some residual water from when I washed it.

according to a website I just found, it is going to be a 35 mm PWK based off of the measurements and model number.

I need some help!! does anyone have, or are you willing to take a picture of the rubber grommet that hold the spare fuses and wire connectors under the headlamp? I'm trying a few different ways to route the wires, and I'm have some difficulty getting it right.

Good luck !!!!! There's not much wiggle room in there. I'll post a pic of mine in the morning. I can't swear that the routing is OEM but the cover fits on so I guess that's what counts.

I went and got the title transfered and tabs for it today, now it is down to the little things, like wiring, battery, petcock for the clark tank. My carb rebuild kit came in today, so that will get done in the next couple of days as well.

Hope this helps. There is one extra set of wires for the speedo light in there so you should just have 2 empty bullet connectors.

Just a quick FYI to fellow Big Red owners.

The plastic sheild that covers the wire connectors in front of the headlamp is still available. I ordered one this morning, the california warehouse has 80 in stock!

I am looking for a rear brake backing plate. The one on mine is broken with coathangers holding the brake cables "in place"

You're in luck. I have a spare Big Red rear that I'm parting out. Do you want the whole brake assembly or just the backing plate? Shoot me a PM with what you need.

Good deal. I love it when things work out like that. You should hear the story of the tecate I got paid to take. ;-)

Did you get the starter working without jumping the wires? I had a rusty connection on the solenoid that took some serious head scratching to troubleshoot. I took the headlight apart, tested every darned thing, cleaned the switches.... you name it, I took it apart, tested it and cleaned it. Finally it came down to the hot connection on the solenoid. It was exposed to weather and got all corroded. I dunno if an '85 is quite like a first gen BR in that regard but it was a lesson learned.

I'm working on getting the electrical all squared away. Lots of cleaning going on to get it perfect. I am in no hurry to make this one run, I just want it right. I've been looking for a Big red for a few years now, a few more weeks won't kill me.

AMAZING. I had one, a large tree limb fell on it and it didn't even die out. It cracked the ladder rack and fenders but that thing wouldn't die.
