I am just currious about setting up a trike for hard Mx and some desert use. I have a quadzilla engine and wondering if it would be worth it to build a custom trike or just mod a 250r or tecate.

i think that a trike with a quadzilla engine would be a realy fast bike, i would definately look into building one

I would really love to do that, but I am just not sure if it would be enough of a revver for real agressive MX and desert riding

They are cool, and I think I could train on one, but they just don't have the beans or suspension for me. I'm 6'0" and 240lbs and need a some more power.

Love the user name! Have you checked out TPC trikes? Those things look awesome! Supposed to have 10" of suspension travel. Sounds like a MX trike to me!

im building a all around 500R with a modded CR500 motor, modded frame and alot of new suspension components, the frame is modded to except my height and weight, you need to rethink a modded 250R.

4 STROKE!!!

If you want some Idea's on suspension, PM me. My bike has 11" + of suspension front & rear, 12.5" of ground clearance with It on a stand.

When these guys are worn out trying to MX a 500, I'll cruise on by HA. Well, maybe not. I sure couldn't get by Louis at Smith Rd last year :beer , but man he was Gasping for air when the race was over. I though he was going to Die. I felt like I could run around the parking lot!!!

Once you ride, and get used to the 4 stroke, you won't want anything else. I gaurantee It!!!

I think what is perfect for what you are looking for is, go buy an 86 Tecate that needs restored so you can get it cheaper. Then bolt a KX 500 on it. The rest you can modify as needed. This is a very easy mod and many people have done it. It's tried and true and it's hard to beat the way Kawies produce power for MX.

If you want to be different you should try to make a suzuki trike using an lt250r engine. I don't think anyone tried this.

I'm 6'4 and 240lbs, I am pretty sure I do pretty well on the fully suspended 250R's

I was definitely dieing that race but it was freakin awesome! Sadly I'm far from conditioned for MX and those 450rs and the seasoned vets on the 250rs are freaking hard to beat!

I will say Jason, you're in for a real fight come next smith rd. I more than held my own on the tight indoor track and definitely was still fairly fresh after each moto, I can't wait to open it up at Smith. I think this years Smith Rd races will be quite the different outcome. Your going to wish you didn't help me with this frame :-P

Seriously though folks the 500s are a workout to MX. mayby if it was a counter balanced engine with a trans more suited to a quad it would be a different story but the 500s are definitely a not for everyone aquired taste. I know myself, since Jason helped straighten my bike out, I haven't touched any other sport trike since.

I'll also say the 450r fourstrokes are so cushy, and thier torque is so tractable. It's almost a cheater bike. :-P Almost...

Oh and if you need suspension help or geometry help in general Jason of "Hall's Performance" is THE definitive guy to talk to.

Yeah, TPC trikes is who I plan on going through, as far as the motor goes, I already have the engine from the fastest production quad ever made, and it has the quality clutch and transmission components to deal with the stress of 3 wheeling. I have heard issues witht the durability of the bike engines(CR500, KX500, IT490, WR500). Heck if I had it my way I'd put a husky 510, 610 or Maico 625 2 stroke in a trike, but A zilla engine is what I have laying about.

The main issues I will have are ones like pipe routing, body work, and other junk like that. That and cash.:wondering

funy. I haven't heard many durability issues about the CR or the KX engine but I hear the zilla engine spins the crank bearing journals pretty regularly.

Just to add my 2 cents here.

Im still rockin the 250r frame over here.

Now dont get me wrong I love the new ones. I just feel VERY at home on the 250r. But im also running a
duncan 265 powervalve motor to stay competitive.
Elka Elite shock out back,
-1 houser swinger,
+4 LSR axle
450r pegs (one of the best mods you can do IMO)
Specialized front forks for now,
(inverts, steering stab and fast flexx bars on the way)

It does me VERY well, I love the way it handles. Heres a few pics-

Thanks Louis! that 5-0 aint no slouch either, ill give you 20 bucks to stall on the line lmao!
Oh i forgot to add,

Fast trekker tires are the TICKET!

get them on a 10in rim and you will LOVE IT!

I agree. My ported LIL 250R motor will still pull the holeshot, and handle straight away speed with any of the Hybrids.
The only place I suffer is More shifting is needed, and the 4 strokes pull out of the turns better, and you can leave them in 3rd gear most of the time,as to where I have to stir the trans up more while racing.

Wow, those are some awsome looking racers. The zilla has it's quirks, but they are easily taken care of by the aftermarket. What do you guys do for suspension set up?

after owning a 500 dirtbike for a while now i can say with confidence they are great for desert and hills but a beast on the mx track, the 250 is much easier to ride hands down and so is a 4stroke, thats coming from a 2stroke fan.

has any one tried using the Kwasaki, KTM, Husqvarna, suzuki, husaberg, or TM engines? I see a load of the honda and Yamaha 450 trikes, just curroius if any other brands have been tried.

Derrick Adams

I think the biggest problem with using the other 450s is just the cost. The Yami is by far the cheapest, and closest to the feel of a 2 stroke. The engine you have would work well for you considering you want to desert ride as well as MX. The logical step is to research what frame will work best for you. No stock trike suspension is up to MX with that engine.

well, I have arived at the conclusion of, I just need an aggressive trike to start practicing on. Anyone want to trade a zilla engine for an 85-86 250R or a 86-87 tecate?

What kind of forks/clamps are on that yamaha?

firefirefire90
03-23-2009, 01:35 AM
not to sound harsh, but I don't think a zilla engine is around the same price as a 250R let alone a tecate.

trikes aren't worth much out here my man. Infact I have yet to have to pay for one and I've gone through a couple 200xs and a couple 185s's and a KLT200

I get your meaning though.
I figure since Zilla engines like mine go for about 600-850 and mine comes with a .005" over extra piston on top of the fact the one in the motor only has about 10 hours the one that's in there I should be able to get a beat 85 R or a decent 84 for it.

Even if you get a stockish 250r your still way ahead.

All you really need to start off is.

A 85/86 250r,
Wheel spacers
18 inch tires
Maybe a pipe/can combo for a lil more ponies.

Then just RIDE RIDE RIDE!

Took me over 4 years and 4 bikes to finally figure out what I want. Now im almost done and complete of what I think is a perfect fit for me.
