I have been building a 86 tecate and i am about to go for the 1st ride.

here are the specs

fresh top and bottom end
CRF pipe and FMF silencer
boyesen reeds
factory air box with K&N filter

Now i know jetting can be tricky and each machine is different but i am looking a starting point for my 39mm pwk carb. if youa re running one plese let me know what pilot jet and main jet you are running.

When I bought my 39 pwk new for my 300r it came with a 160 main and a 60 pilot that would probly be a fair starting point..

that pilot sounds huge. my kx500 has a 45 in it.

thanks for the help.

i have a box of mains so i should be good. it has a 45 pilot and 175 main right now with a #6 slide. not sure on the needle.

On my 86 KX250 I run 160 or 155 main and 40 or 45 pilot with POD filter.

I would start with that.. I run a 42/168 in my 250 with no airbox, but its only a 38pwk... My 39.5 I got from a kx500 came with 55/145 and a #7 slide.. but a 250 is likely going to need a much larger main jet than a 500 due to the weaker signal strength.. Starting way fat and changing jets several times is alot less work than replacing a top-end..

Its kind of apples to oranges but I was running around a 185 in my 250R with a basically stock motor and just a little compression added. Actually, I had a PTR Hi-Rev pipe, DG silencer, K&N, no air box lid, and about 180psi of compression. I was running it on av-gas and at about sea level. I know its a totally different engine but hopefully it gives you a push in the right direction.
