Alright, this thing is killing me. Anyone tell me why this dang thing is back firing when I try to start it. Fresh rebuild, port work, pipe and intake. Won't start, just backfires. Any help would be geratly appreciated. THanks

Could be flooded.

check your stator. Mine did the same thing and I found the key that holds the flywheel was sheared off and let it rotate.

using delta v force 2 reeds. Anyone had problems with those?

my '85 T3 does the same thing, has spark, fuel, air, and good reeds, tried moving stator plate and a few other things with no luck. Quit messing with it for now.

backfireing is most likely a timing issue, so i am going along with everyone else that said that. what kind of stator are you using? stock? ricky stator? etc....

It's a new ricky with the stock flywheel. If it's timing, do I advance? It is firing exhaust side.

I've advanced it as far as it will go. It sputtered for a second and then backfired again. I need to advance it more. Is it safe to open the holes and move it further?

No it's not! I have never in my life seen so many problems with Tecate ignition. And some of the opinions expressed over the years on this topic. And it is one of the easiest to diagnose. Put the stator mark even with ridge on case, and make sure key is not sheared. If it doesn't fire, look elsewhere and begin testing. I've never seen a tecate that won't fire and run great with simply lining up marks. Never! Be it a Ricky set up or oem. And i've built quite a few. Use these specs for testing.

coil resistance: blade terminal to mounting boss should be 0.8-1.2
plug lead resistance: lead to mounting boss 5.6-8.4

Stator resistance:
black to blue= 170-250
black to white/red=185-280
blue to white red=20-30

Wasn't there post not long ago stating that the guy used a timing light to get his correct on his tecate. I tried to look it up quick but didnt find it. I am using my ipod touch currently.

Alright. I ran some electrical and here's what I got:
stator;
black to blue 203
black to red/white 227
blue to red/white 24.4

coil resistance is
blade 7.46
plug lead is .3

Do I need a new coil because the plug lead is low?

Oh yeah, I painted the frame, I only left bare metal for the coil to mount. Should I scrape somewhere else?

Could it be a lack of ground, from painting the frame?
