View Full Version : 1984 Hoda ATC 200M Restore all done !!

Well got another one done and in the book's.Although not one of the most popular machine's as far as Honda's go,I picked up this '84 200M a few month's back and decided it was a nice candidate for a complete restore.I've done restore's on all the 200 Big Red's but never on a 200M so this machine completed those Honda 200 model's for me restoration wise.When I picked up the old girl she had some issue's from a leaky base and head gasket ,a pretty loud ticking noise,the dawg on the recoil was not working properly so it was catching on the recoil cage on the flywheel and the clutch was fried too the point that it barely moved,just slipped.Ah' what else - oh the exhaust gasket was blown out ,carb leaked gas out the bottom,tank was dented,left rear fender was cracked,brake's were shot cable's were junk and lot's more issue's.LOL,sound's like quite the list but I felt it deserved another chance,so I started the restoration.

This one was pretty much a complete restore from the ground up,including the motor.I got the motor out and blasted it assembled and started taking it apart from there.I went with a complete top-end rebuild with a stock cam,new timing chain,piston ring's redid the head with new seal's,did a competition cut on the valve's and seat's,did a simple cross hatch on the cylinder which was still on stock bore and a few other thing's as far as the top.I also replaced the clutch and all those goodie's on the right side case and with the carb I made it easier on myself and just went with a new carb.Motorwise everything was actually in pretty good shape,it looked as though it was not maintained really good and the gasket's had been leaking for sometime with all the oil not only on the motor but all over the frame.It was a cosmetic trainwreck.Here's a couple pic's of when I first got it up on the operating table a day or so into the project,after I cleaned it off with the powerwasher.More down below::)

While doing the motor at the same time I had sent the frame out to a buddy of a buddy who is just getting started off doing powder.He's been tinkering with it for a couple month's after he got a kit from eastwood.he had a makeshift little oven that he made out of scap steel that barely got the frame in it.He used an old house oven and still does but he just built this bigger one-It turned out pretty fair and he's still learning PC but I'm sure i'll be using him for many more machine's in the future.

These pic's are of the motor freshened up and getting ready to put it together and how she looked at the begining.More below:

After I had enough to get the rolling chasis together I started assembly along at the same time I was getting the hardware zinc'd and getting the tank done.I don't know about any of you's but I just ai'nt a great painter and when it come's to body work in general,i'd rather have a person who know's the trade well do it instead.I ended up doing the tank myself due to painter issue's again(long story),and I was actually half arsed impressed with how it turned out..but i'd rather have my painter do it.Anyway's pic's show me laying out the decal's on the tank.Notice I use painter's tape to lay out the decal's-thus I use reference point's off a duplicate tank to square off decal's.More below:

Assembly went pretty smooth but sure did take more time than I had anticiptated.It was one of those deals to where if it were a rider or in for service/repair's I could have had it together in 1/2 a day but , I was getting pretty anal on how it was looking.I was also starting to loose interest in finishing it up because I had another project and I was really antsy to get on that project but I told myself I was gonna finish the 200M before I was elbo's deep in the other one and then had 2 project's going, so I bit the bullet and finished it up.I kept it as close to OEM as possibly with a few exception's and I switched out the OEM H-Trac's on the rear for some regular Knobbie's,and both of the brake lever's.

Early last week I was having a talk with a newer associate who own's a local machine shop with CNC,Lathe's,waterjet's,jig's etc. ,basically a fabricator's dream shop-and by the end of us talking he was the new owner of the '84 200M site unseen.So I promised him the machine on Fri. and that's when he got it.I assembled it and did all the adjustment's on the table - it was ready to go to it's new home.Once I got it down I took it for a test ride and it worked perfect with only 1 minor adjustment,I loaded it in the truck and went and delivered it.LOL,I only got a handful of pic's after I finished it up.Mike the new owner was amazed with it and is gonna keep it at his shop for lite duty chore's around there and use it for hunting and ice fishing.

Knowing these 200M's don't get the showtime or attention that other trike's get ,I thought you guy's would appreciate seeing one all done up plus I think the way this story ended up for me,it was worth telling you's about.And I'm also glad that I finished up with that series of 200 model's except for the '85 200M,but this '84 will be good enough,LOL.I think the 200M's are pretty nice machine's but out of those type of model's I personally like the '82 200E Big red as the favorite cosmetic wise. DONE:

Awesome job. So do you make decent money on something like this when you sell, or do you basically break even and just enjoy doing it? It was the latter for me on 2 that I have done, and I didn't even make them all that nice.

I have it set-up with the engine machine shop that I deal with that they do a 3 way cut,example would be 15-45-65 dergees. Some guy's say you are'nt supposed to cut the valve or that you can't but on all my 4 stroke's I get a competition(3-way) cut,Honda manual's say not to cut the valve's.I pesonally believe it take's the life out of the valve's but it help's insure a tight fit valve's to seat..:) That's another issue all to itself.

Thanks for the compliments Guy's.Honestly most of the time I do make money when doing a restored machine,but I just got burned on a '85 200S that I sold on E-Bay last week.This 200S was all orginal but the guy who had it camo'd it for some reason and all I did was clean it up,paint the tank, and fix a couple broken thing's but it was a nice machine.I did'nt loose my arse but I only cleared 550.00 and E-bay raped me,that was the 1st time i've used e-bay in better than a year and it will be along time till i sell a machine on there again,I gaurentee that..I know one thing the fella that won that machine got a hellofa deal for the price..

Most of the machine's I restore or rebuild and my custom's are built specificaly for client's and are drawn up by contract before I work on the machine,so yes I do make money on them but's it's the passion of doing these ATC's and seeing the end result that keep's me in the game.Plus a happy customer..

Brapp I like seeing these workhorses all prettied up also.We should start a thread on pretty workhorse trike's.

Yes indeedy. Everyone and their brother restores the sport trikes, but not many care enough to mess with the utilitys. Very nice work and thanks for the pics!

I've always loved those bike. As you mentioned in a post above you were weary on painting the tank yourself. I don't see why though because that tank looks flawless. Great work.

Very, very nice work! I'm a big fan of the utility trikes, and i can only wish i had the type of skills you seem to have.....I just started trying to "restore" a 250es and i'm constantly thinking "Man, i bit off more than i can chew"......very good work, the 200m is a great machine!

looks great, I am also a fan of the 82 200e, the graffics were simple, but looked totally awsome, I wish they kept them for 83.

puppi does some good work. My brother owns a 185s from him.

Speaking of that 185S,how's it doing nowaday's anyway's Y2Kane.I dug up a pic of it when I had just finished it up.That was back in '05 ...I also put up a couple pic's of an '82 I did up ,that's my favorite machine rite there.IDK,I just really like how the tank decal's were color wise-I think it dressed the machine up better than the '83-'84 decal's.:)

Awesome work. That 185s is a beaut. I did mine up but not to that level. Mine was still one of the nicer ones I have seen. Usually 185s trikes are just beat.

That's a nice looking machine you got.I don't think I ever had an '81 185S ,LOL - not that I can remember anyway's.The front fender on your machine ,is that onr off of an '83 185S or a 200S,I thought the other's were more rounded..Machine look's tite though.
