how to:set timing

me and my friend just put in a new timing chain in my 81 atc200 but we cant seem to get it timed correct. can anybody give a in depth guide.. at the moment we have the intake vavle going down then a pause then the exaust vavle goes down :drool:

no manuals for my bike and the one for a 200s dont really describe howto set the timing..

There is overlap between the valves. That is the point at which both valves are slightly open to together, but one should opening, while the other is closing.
There should be marks.

The timing mark on the flywheel, and the mark on the cam gear should line up with something.

Ok, here goes. Remove the upper plug from the left side cover and turn the engine over until you see the T mark. Then remove the chain and line the dot on the cam gear with the triangle shaped spot on the head above the opening. Reinstall the chain. The cdi should have a line on it that lines up with the same spot as the cam gear. Double check you marks on each part

Don't forget to pull the spark plug and make sure that it is on TDC (top dead center, when the piston is all the way up). The t-mark will show up when the piston is on the bottom too and you'll be 180 deprees out. Also make sure the cam gear is on correctly.

T-mark in opening, piston at TDC, mark on cam gear lined up with mark at top of head, cam lobes down and valves closed.

Yes, but it will fire at the wrong time.

Make sure the pin in the cam that turns the rotor didn't fall out.

ok so it is perfectly timed ! but the only problem is when u hold the throttle it revs cuts out revs again etc. any help!?

Have you tore the carb and petcock apart and cleaned them? What about valve adjustment?

Had a similar problem with my big red. Try adjusting the fire timing by turning the plate holding the pulser coil. There is a mark on the flywheel to adjust it.

my buddy messed around with the fire timing it doesnt cut out half way the only slight problem is it lightly cuts out before i have to shift?
its got tuns of balls now but im sure its not supose to do this.

I'm with Erics350X. Clean the carb good and adjust the valves and timing chain tensioner.
