I am in the market for an 84. But I want to know what I'm getting into?

I hope they don't have frame problems like the 350X.:rolleyes:

Are they good all year round riders?

Streangths = 250R

Weaknesses = Rider

I never read or heard of, as of yet, any weaknesses about the 250r that would impact your riding it.

As with all the ATC's the rear breaks suck, other than that i never had any real complaints on the old school R's.

No weakness on the 84r model. Very durable overall.

Only problem is getting parts. Not all, just some.

Air cooled have some much low end torque. I miss mine.

Yeah there pretty much bullet proof, the clutch will need beefed if you plan on doing extreme performance mod's to the motor though as on any bike.

Nothing that a set of good pads and maybe SS brakes lines wouldn't fix. I don't like too agressive pads. I lock up too easily. SS brake lines make the difference. All depends on your riding style.

^ I'm glad you saw my humor in it.... :D

All kidding aside, I think those air cooled R's are a very simple and reliable ATC. Look at the years you've been here, there haven't been allot of posts about any one specific failure.

The suspension might be a step down but your not a big jumper anyhow...

Only thing that comes to mind, is that you already have the "cats ass" liquid 250R so I don't know what you expect to gain from it.

You claimed when selling the 350X that you had your R and you were all set (or did I read that wrong??) I think you have a disease, one in which you love the restore, love the challenge but then grow tired of it in the end and want to start again. In other words, your a Hondamiser :lol:

I really think a 4 stroke would be a nice addition to your garage but apparently that 350X frame bothered you?? I told you how I felt about them, and I haven't broke mine yet (knocks on wood...) You were close, I'm really sad to see you let that build end.

Not to mention that your buddie is selling the GPX177!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DAM, I buy stuff and keep it FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good things to read. Picked my 84 250r up a month or two ago. Haven't ridden it yet but slowly building it up!

Takes about half the time to work on my airfooler than my liquid 86Z. That's my favorite part. Also, if you plan on riding at night you'll need something better than the stock headlight. Very dim.

I have always been aware of the torque these make down low. I want to experience it first hand.:twisted:

These are the favorite of the Air cooled R's. I want to pick one up really nice. Not needing much work.

Your a pack rat. LOL

My 85 225 was like that. Is it that dim?
Assuming you have ridden a 225 at knight.

Not sure about the 225 but The R looks like your shinning a flashlight in front of you.

I had a problem w/84'. The right side of the frame where it goes to the foot peg, cracked twice. I've welded it and it hasn't broke since.(knock on wood)I do a lot of jumping and hard riding( rocks and long rides) I'm 160lbs with gear on. I've rolled it a few times, broken levers and bent handle bars. As long as you don't jump it over 15-20 ft. to many times. (hard lands) She'll hold.:D

So you want - experience down low - especially first hand?? well......... I think you've already had that EDOG........... :lol:

:D

Anyhow, what are your thoughts?? your liquid is lacking low end gusto? and your thinking the air cooled motor will give up some bottom end grunt??

??

2 strokes just don't pull much in low RPM'S!! Liquid or air..................

My R chugs along good in the lower rpm's.

well I cant say anything about performance or durability.. But I always thought the '84 was a good looking machine..

I don't drink.

Well that explains everything:lol:

They're pretty cool trikes. I have a friend that lives in CO that is obsessed with those things. He posted up a black 84 he'd built around a year and a half ago. He swears by them. They're pretty quick when done right. Other cool thing is you don't have to fight with so many people on eBay when you're trying to get stock or aftermarket parts for them.
