Going price of a ATC250R

I am in the market for a'85-'86 250r and I am not sure how much I should be paying. I found an '85 ATC250R that is mechanically in good shape, stock pipe with aftermarket silencer and some decent looking plastic but it has cracks in various locations. It needs tires but has been garage kept. It runs good and he is asking $1500. What have you guys been seeing bikes like this go for?

Out here in NY that is the going rate. They range from like $2100 for really really nice one. Like $700 for a non running one that needs work and everything in between. I saw a 84 250r in running condition go for $400 last week.

Sounds like a good deal. Ride it first, to make sure. If all you have to do is put tires on it, I'd do it.

the economy has a lot to do with pricing right now,,,, here in phoenix they range from $750 to $2500 and its a buyers market,,, i have picked up several in the last 2 months,,,, so my parts bins are filling up nicely!!!!

Missouri the water pumpers range from around $1200-$1800. Many people ask for more but they wont sell.

The three wheelers are starting to bring more than the trx250r's now.

For a little more than the 1500 he's asking you can get one thats pretty much new. Mine had 12 hours when i got it on a documented top and bottom end rebuild .020 over with new crank, piston, all bottom bearings, and some polished motor parts, all new maier plastics, oem tank, all new bearings and seals in the suspension. Its basically a super tight machine that now has 20 hours on it and its been flawless as a weekend rider for me. Anyway i paid either 1850 or 1950 for it i can't recall but i'm thinking it was 1850. So it pays to shop around, the one i have was for sale for a long time and he was asking 2500 so i just shot him an offer for the money i had available to spend. Depending on what you're looking for plastics and tires as well as axle bearings and the chain/sprocket sets can run you 500.00+ so i always try to keep that in mind when i'm shopping around, TC...

$1500 sound fair. If you know what to look for you might be able to get him to drop the price some. Like I said you got to know what to look for.

I ended up getting the '85 250R. I ended up giving $1400 and it is a one owner bike. He gave me the factory hondaline cover, owners manual, tool kit/container(it isn't on the bike). He bought it late '84, said it was the first '85 model at the dealership, he had a '82 250R and wanted the liquid cooled model. It has replacement rear and front Maier fenders from '86 or so he said, he said it was about a year or so old when the first ones broke. It has a '86 model flat slide from a 250R, DG rear grab bar, Answer Silencer, 2 stage reed valves(anyone have these, he said he boosted low end torq quite a bit), really big moose bars( I am looking for something shorter/narrower). It still has the factory tires but I am currently looking to swap out to some flatter style like the 450R's have. I rode it quite a bit yesterday and it is really fun to ride, still getting used to it, been on quads for about 4 years and the is the first trike since I started on quads. That looks like a pretty fair buy for $1400.
Congrats!

The only 2 stage reeds I have heard of, were Boyeson or FMF torque reeds.
The FMF reeds, did help the low end on our old YZ 80.

Looks like a very well kept machine based on the seat's near perfect condition. Being one owner i'm sure he babied it a little bit more than someone who bought one for 300.00 from his neighbor in the early 90's. It's a good investment in my mind, TC...

Looks like a nice ride. I took a cpl years off from riding trikes about ten years ago, it was a hard learning curve for about a month after i got back into them.

I seen the other day that a 1985 atc 250r in Alberta was up for 8000 CND.
Said he just put 6000 in the motor. Too pricey for me.

The west coast prices don't seem to be quite as bad as midwest (or everywhere else for that matter). I think the climate allows for more survivors...basically more of a selection. In the midwest, if you want a nice one....it'll be $1500. I got the one in my signature recently for $1500 and it wasn't even advertised. It was a friend of a friend and he knew what it was worth.
