View Full Version : If you had a chance to get your first trike/bike/quad back, would you?

Thought it would be a cool idea for a thread. Tell a story about your first ride, and if you'd want it back or not. I'll go first: my first bike was a 1978 Suzuki RM80. The teeth on the kicker shaft were long since stripped, and I wasn't big enough to push start it,so I didn't ride it much, but I was still mad when my Dad traded it for a trans or tools or whatever he did. Gave it to a guy from work, sat in the back of his garage for a few years, then he gave it to his neighbors' kids, they pushed it down the driveway and it started right up! I really want to track this bike down, at least just to hear what became of it, and at most to buy it back. Anyone else?

I bought my 85 Honda 250es new from Cougar & Hunter in Flushing, MI along with a 125m for my wife at that time and a TRX 125 for my 11 year old son. I still have the BR and have as a project down the line restoring a TRX 125. The 125m of the ex wife I don't care about

My first was an '84 Big Red in 1984. Yeah, I'd like to have it back, but if we were talking about one single machine that I've ever had.....the 'Red would be way down the list. First would be between the '86 Z I bought new and the Cagiva I let slip away.

My first ever was an 85 ATC 70 when I was 3. It had messed up fenders and a Z 50 front tire but I used to ride that thing everywhere...It was stolen while we were on vacation =(.

Mine would be a 1977 Yamaha GT80. Apparently they are worth far more now than they were then. I have spent the last couple of years looking for one in decent shape for the right money. Those two requirements don't go together.

Yeah I know what you mean. My '78 RM80 was probably a $300 bike when new. Guys on eGay are sellin' them restored, for thousands of dollars! I could buy a nice 350X for the price of one '78 RM80! Yeah no thanks. Keep 'em coming guys.

Oh yeah buck I think we used to have a GT80. I don't remember it that well, (I was like 7 at the time) but my Bro spent a good deal of time working on it, and I think it blew up the same day he got it running. I've no idea what happened to it after that...

Nope......

I owned some wonderful bikes and trikes back in my day.....

I had an 87 200X but the guy never changed the oil and it was a dog.... I do remember it feeling and looking much better than the 85 I had at the same time though :D

The dirtbikes were the most fun, my 1982RM250 was AWESOME!! But compared to the stuff now??

I just want a well handling and reliable trike with about 50% to 75% of newer models' parts used on it!! :D

Even my 83CR60 was a friggen blast!!

I had a '78 XR75. I was 12. Dad gave a guy $20 for it. Ran great no rear wheel bearings. He traded a guy some fireworks (we had a little business) for the labor and a couple weeks later I had my first bike.

Rode it everyday for about 3 years and then it wouldn't start. Sold it to some guys we knew for $50.

They put some valves and new cam chain in it and rode it for about 5 years.

I tried to buy it from them about 3 years ago after church one Sun and they said they had just sold it to a guy with 2 boys for $100.00.

I'm 28 and want it back, that thing was fun as hell!!!

Still have my 1985 Honda 125M-- although now it has a blown trans. That's what happens when you never let off the gas to shift! I got it for Christmas of 85, I remember it like it was yesterday. I was pissed, hardly got anything under the tree, both sisters got a load of goods. The the old man tells me to go out to the barn and get a trash bag for all the wraping paper. There she was---factory fresh- I just about trailpro ed in my PJ's. The tears were rolling down my cheeks, the old man snuck out behind me to get my reaction, he even started to cry for me. Boy when my sisters found out the shoe was on the other foot then, they were jacked! After the tears, the old man told me it had 15 more cc than my neighbors 110, he said that shold be enough to keep me in the front! Now I want to locate a trans to put it back together so that this can be the trike my son learns to ride on!

83 yz100, and a few mos later i got a near new 84 yz80. This was 1986. I loved both bikes but i sold them off to finance my addiction to the 125s. Luckily i have some decent pics of most of my old bikes. But i would love to have the yz100 now. The bike was in very nice shape when it was sold. Still have a cool 84 yz 250 though, that i picked up back in 02 just to keep it real. Last of the yellow ones.

Yeah my old man is cool with stuff like that, he still does it to me today, just now I'm 34 and he's 69. The old man always takes care of the kids, now I get to do that with my son and daughter. My mother is a Saint to put up with his shens . Everything gas powered I got was a "NO" from Mom, but it always ended up in the garage! Mom eventually gave up saying no.

My parents were never into this stuff, never had any type of motorcycle quad anything until I got my 84 200M 2 years ago from a guy I worked with who was going to take it to the dump. I never did anything with it, gave it to a neighbor who got it running. Then about a year ago we moved to our house now and I can ride about 20 seconds out of my garage, so I bought it back from him for $100. I want other stuff, I've got the bug now, but I'll never part with this one. One day I'll do a full restore on it when I have some money. I want my kids to have those stories about getting one at Christmas, that is awesome!

i still have my first bike, its a 2001 suzuki LT160, i haul wood with it!! its an amazing bike, i should show some video of the wood i haul with it for heating the house, its insane for a 160... but ive only owned 3 bikes, the suzuki (sook) my 200S (sold), and well, ive always wanted a 250R, ALWAYS, i spent the last few years looking for one. Last year i seen an 84 R and i wanted it bad but i couldnt get the money saved up for it. this year i had a new job, and all of a sudden there was an ad for an 85' 250R online in newfoundland (very rare) so i said "man im at least havin a look at it" so i went up and seen it, it was cazy cool lookin, and about 8 hours after i seen it i bought it for $1500 even though it needed evertything except for an engine rebuild (seriously!!) haha i love it

Mine was 1985 Kawasaki Byou 185 quad left over demo bike that me and my two older brothers got for Xmas in 86. So me at 6 had to fight my two older brothers to get some seat time. But as they got older and into cars it was all mine but beat to snot, i sank every last dime i had saved up in to it and man if i didnt put a mile on it, it didnt have 100K by the time I was done. I remember going down to the gas station at least twice a week to fill the can. I rode that bike every day to all of my friends houses. Now I dont go threw 2 cans of gas in a month during peak riding season. Those were the good days, no responceablitys what so ever, just ride every day. Now I get to drink beer and watch my son do endless hot laps around the house, its worth it..

My first bike was a Trek 4300 *yup mountain bike* Made a friction drive out of a chainsaw and a bmx peg. Got up to 30mph easily. Did dirt trails, road, sand with it... was awesome. I traveled from WA to IA to VA on it. Did many many hours and miles after that. Was hit by 2 cars on it, dented frame badly, gears all went out. now it sits on the side of the house in pieces. Its the trooper that I really shouldn't have molested... but 3 months in rain and snow made it a rusted heap.

First of all i would definitely like it how it was years ago. But the no suspension in the rear was killing me. Still, I want her back to its old glory. I have a Trek liquid thats going to get the same treatment.

First offroad bike, was my CRF450r. Hated it... dont want it back

Hell no!

It was a big red with a bent axle and welded hubs, leaked oil I always had to keep a few quarts in the box everywhere I went, and no one would let me ride in front unless there was a mosquito problem.

I guess I might take her back:(

Looking back, we had some real junkers. The first picture is ATCTim on a Suzuki (that never really ran) and me on the AMF Harley Davidson. ATCTim getting a ride on the Harley with mom in the second picture. Dad got this bike from free from siding a lady's house for her.
It was a few years later until we were big enough to ride it, but when we did, we rode it until the front sprocket was round and just spun inside the chain. That Harley was British made and had the foot brake on the left and the shifter on the right. The shift pattern was 1 up / 3down, so if you forgot and went for the footbrake, you would often just shift to a higher gear. Scary!
Would I want it back? Not really.

Between ages 10-14, I rode (everday) in the dirt on a Bridgestone (90cc?) streetbike. It was probably about a 1965 and I remember it having an old street registration sticker on it from the late sixties. I had street tires, mirrors, and almost no suspension, but I rode it on trails and in dirt and tried to jump it all the time. It shifted 4 down, then hit neutral, then 4 down again, then neutral......

When I was 14 my parents bought me an old Hodaka Wombat 125 for my birthday. It never ran quite right, but it sure was powerful (for me at the time). Also, I finally had a knobby tire and real dirt bike.

I don't have any pictures of these bikes, but they looked something like this (except old, busted, rusty and crappy), not shiny like these ones. I would love to have either of these bikes back now.

^I now where your coming from. I used to ride our 70cc Honda Passport around the yard. That thing was not intended for off the roads, but I think I wiped out more on the gravel roads from simply going too fast! Why am I saying used to? I still ride that thing around the dirt track!

I started on a Kawasaki 110 my dad fixed up for me 10 years ago and I got for Christmas (best present ever!). I would buy it back if I could.

The first trike I learned how to ride on was my brothers '79 atc 110, I would love to have that one back, I have even started restoring a 1980 110 as a clone '79.

I got a new ATC 70 for christmas in 1985. We had it till about 1992, then sold it (back then for £350) , it was near mint. At the time i didnt care, i'd never seen a 250R and none of our friends or neighbouring farms had a trike. I miss it now, the family that bought it wrecked it, as far as my dad can remember
Back in 2004 i bought my first 85 Z, it had a crap resto job on it so i bought another and let the first one go. I sold that second one in 2007. After having quite a few from both years i'd now like that second one back as i now know it was a fast bike, as i'v had plenty to compare it to since ! But, i have nice bikes now so i shouldnt really complain

My first bike I had was a 1983 xr100. I loved that bike and it pulled me around fine. Had it sinc I was 10 till about 2 years ago when the cam locked up. Traded for a 84 big red. I would defintly take it back. It may be small but jumping the old dirt ramps while my buddies were on their pedal bikes was awsome. The first trike I had was a 85 200m. Being 13 at the time and wanting a racer(although I couldn't afford it) I did some work. Painted the frame red and plastics white. Also recovered the seat blue. I cut the fenders down and put small junk tires on it. Since I couldn't afford a performance ehuast I ran a straight pipe. That was a fun bike at the time but not really what I want now.

My first was an 85 atc 70. Got it new for christmas in 84. I was 6. I had it a few years, wrecked it many times. Had the time of my life. Went everywhere a 70 could go. I let a few people use it over the years and it finally made its way back to me-broken and battered. I completely restored it about a year ago from the ground up and now it looks just like the day I got it. Worth every penny!

The '80s:drool:
Going into a local dealership was a beautiful sight! Until the last couple years, there were almost nothing but 3-wheelers in the showrooms. The ride areas were almost all 3-wheelers.
Two local towns had flattrack, drag, and later MX tracks which, for a while, were attended by 100% 3-wheelers.

....then came those 4-wheeled abominations:lol: , and by 1988 I tried not to enter a dealership through the showroom entrance to get to the Parts Dept.
