any one have a step by step on how to get the main spring back in? i have tried 12 times and have multiple cuts and sore fingers, i try coiling it up on the spinning drum then putting it in but it just ends up exploding in my face, its for a yt 125 if that helps

I had that thing apart I am the one that bent the tab over on the end of that spring, that shortened it and made it a bit tighter but u can still get it in just set that shite on the floor and spool it up the only tools you mit need really are a flat head and something to tighten the little nut

Try winding it some and then clamping vice grips after each time around so it can't come undone on you

coil the entire thing inside the case

you need to coil it up as much as you can in your hands then hook the one end to the case and coil it up and stick it in there the space in the center should be enuff that you can drop in the part that spins turn that until it catches the end of the spring and bolt it down after that just wind it up all the way back it off a half turn stick in your rope tie it off and let it go

Ok here is how I do it and was tought this by a Honda mechanic when I worked at the dealership. Once you do it this way you will be amazed. I posted pics on my website fo you to see, it ios for an ATC 70 but will work on any starter. Don't laugh at my site I just stated to build it this week (or I mean learn how to build) for my buisness and my Tiger stuff. A pull stater how to was is planned and will be better later, for now you need to start with the spring hooked on the outside edge andwork the spring in one loop at a time while holding the spring down with your thumbs.

I saw a video of this (YouTube I think, I can't find it now). The guy put long pegs in premade holes in his workbench top (he must do them alot) with one in the center to hook the spring to and the some around the circumference. He wound it and as it got tighter, he took the pegs and moved them in towards different holes, closer and closer as it got smaller. He tied garbage ties around it before he lifted it up to put it into the housing. Not sure if I described it well enough.

ok i got it, nailed the caseing down to the work bench using the holes, coil the spring up by hand as tight as it goes, held it together with vice grips, placed it in the casing and then put the drum back in a winded tight as it would go, then tied the rope on, has a really good tension to it now. thanks for all the links and help, now i am on finding what else i am missing, i have the plate that holds the dogs in and i know i have to buy springs and dogs for it, i have the retaining bolt also what else am i missing for it? it came as a bare skeleton basically
