The CalFab on that swingarm looks unique in that is has a skidplate. I havent seen one like that before. My Calfab has skidplate mounts, so maybe they offered an optional skidplate?

brapp
02-12-2009, 01:42 PM
the guy i purchased it of fof said he bough tit off a race shop 12 years ago and had number54 on the number plate that was on it btu when he wrecked it it for destroyed but i think i steped in tril pro and came out smellign liek a rose on somethign once again.

PS.. if it runs as good as it looks... I better bring the tow rope! LMAO!!!

Brapp, you would be a god if you got that SkidPlate reproduced for the few of us that have Cal-Fabs:beer I would want one for sure and mine has the holes for a skid plate to be mounted. Just not sure if the 84-85 Tecate Cal-Fab is different than the 86.

Other than that, this is one of the best scores this year so far:w00t:

I was talking to him today a few times and he sounds like a little boy in a candy shop all crazy like and hopped up on something.....LOL. Oh well at these he is happy, now to go home & see if it is in our bedroom or the bed has been moved downstairs....

Can you post a picture of the swinger / carrier form the back. if it has parking brake parts on the rear caliper it prob a 87.
It looks like it also has a KX cylinder on it, they were usually grey, kxt black. w/o pulling it apart its just a guess.

Very nice find, Brapp. I really wouldn't be surprised if that Tecate doesn't have some racing history in it's past. I don't think the average person back in the day would have bought all of those goodies. If you could add it up that stuff new back in the 80's was alot of money. Keep us updated on the progress with it.

that skid wouldn't be that hard to make. its the stock one thats a pain. i could make the stock one like that but theres no where to mount it on the stock swinger.

How about some high quality pics of the Klemm shroud stickers and the CalFab arm stickers? There used to be someone on ebay a few years back that made the CalFab ones but I don't see them any more. Riding MIK6's T3 last weekend has gotten me hot to get my T3 back in order. I've had a CalFab swinger hanging in the shed for 5 years now. Unfortunately the meat head that had the T3 before me had a Klemm pipe on it but he smashed it when he wrecked with his girl on the back and tossed it.

JohnR.
03-05-2009, 10:32 PM
That's what I'd probably do. However, everyone keep in mind that the KX500 motor is almost a bolt in, no hacking of the frame is necessary, just modding the top motor mount from what I'm being told.

John

The top angled tube must be cut to clear the plug/boot, but if its been welded on before then it can be welded again if it was taken back to the race setup...

exactly former race glory is awesoem and my plan but the interchangability of the 500motor is just an insane idea

while the kx500 swap is easy it is not that easy. that is the only big frame mod but you have other hurtles to get over. i have built one kxt500 (not my mutt) and have thought about putting my kx500 motor into a roller t3 that i have.

while the calfab is made of gold it will be useless with a kx500 on there. i recently flipped my Mutt over in 3rd on grass with a +6" swinger and it will do the same in 5th if i ain careful.

yeah i knwo wher eyou allare comign from but i ahve done abotu 5 or 6 of the kx500motors into the tecate-4 chasis, a lt500 into a lt250 hybrid chassis, a gsxr1100 motor into a lt500, a frc450 into a 400ex, a cr500into a 400ex, and a blaster motor into a klt110, a trx250r motor into a trx 90, somotor swaps arent a major deal for me it sjust the fact that i love the tecate 250 the way they are and always wanted an ols school mx trike, but on the othe rhand i want a nasty kx500 powered tecate-3 i am gatherign little parts to put the chasis together and make it runnable with the existign motor i can stillride the kx500in bike form. so i am gonan do it up as a 250 first and then mabey onc ei get allthe bugs worked out chasis wise them mabey the 500 may make a jump over.

Hey, so it sounds like this bike was one of Donnie Luce's old Factory KXT's - if it had the modified rear subframe, as listed by the other guy on here who was in Florida and had a former factory Tecate. Pretty cool! What did you ever do with the bike? I bet it is worth some huge coin if it is still set up as a race bike...

yooperman
02-04-2011, 01:15 AM
if you still have this bike you have any updated pics of its condition now? and you should post pics of that modified subframe. i am digging that skid plate was there ever a repro run on it? because it was sounding like there might have been. what is that other calfab piece you have a picture of in the first set of pictures of the trike? i couldnt figure out what it was. i am gonna have to do some reaserch to get more info on my shock now, because yours is stock and mine looks different and has a sticker that says graydon proline on it HMMMM i am wondering if mine has a good one on it lol.

maybe you could help out here. same questions as yooperman. im having sblt500r custom fab up a skid for my calfab. did you ever look at the repro of this? or can you provide yours for him to copy it (if he needs it)?

also, having frank (fmnrd) looking at reproducing those shroud decals with klemm research. did you ever get anywhere with this either? can you check with him on anything that might help with the project, images or stencil, etc...

02-05-2011, 03:21 AM
I might be wrong and thus sound like an idiot, but those rad. shroud decals look like stock OEM KXT 250 decals with cutout Klemm Decals stuck on top of them on the stripe. pretty simple to mimic, actually....you just need the Klemm decals. Thats the hard part.

I recall a few weeks ago some dude here on the board had another "factory" kxt posted. I cant find his post, but I do think it is worth comparing his posts, and details on his bike with this, and with the goal to determine if in fact they are factory rides. I had not heard of the other dude and dont know who he was (perhaps we was a tech on the team?), but I do know that the "team green" seat cover on that KXT he has was the real deal from way back in 1986. My memory says they are both 86 models. With only the #31 and the #54 as top riders back then, as well as Jacky Meadows (what number was he?), it shouldnt be too hard to determine or compare these.

This KXT, well, I am not sure about, but with what was discussed with rear grab bar and removable fenders, it sounds like they could have been similar. Though Donnie Luce didnt wear Gear Racewear (I think he was a JT guy), but that doesnt mean that someone didnt purchase this bike from Donnie and or the team and put some Gear stickers on it.

By the way, Gear was a PA company, and this bike was located in PA, so it would make sense that a second or third owner changed the decals to suit their personal sponsors - or tastes.

Anyway, sorry to dig up some ancient 2009 thread here, but it would be cool if we had two former historical race bikes.

Hopefully this rig didnt have some nitro infused kx500 shoehorned into it a very historically significant machine...
