i have a 1985 200m it has a weak spark I am going to replace the coil (I already cleaned the contacts of the pickup) I have been looking on e bay and am finding all kinds of coils for a 200s wondering what models of coil will work for my 200 I am talking about the coil that connects to the spark plug

I have seen a primary coil for sale as well does my 200m have a primary coil? can this also cause a weak spark If I am replaceing one should I replace both Thanks for any help - Zach

it could be many things and you cant tell what needs to be replaced unless it gets tested for high resistance, if you know anybody with a multimeter check the cables and coils and that should keep you from buying the wrong thing.

I have a multimeter where can I find the resistance ratings for all components. Thanks

Zach, Check the Black with red striped wire coming from the stator ( behind the pull starter ). Make sure it's unplugged. You should have 200-240 ohms. The lower the ohms the weaker the spark. I have seen machines run ( crappy ) with a ohm reading of less than 200, but they had weak spark.

If you get a ohm reading of under 200 then I reccommend replacing the exciter coil ( part of the stator ). This is actually a fairly cheap fix ( under $25 if you do it yourself ).

so is this to test the stator? wondering where I need to put the leads of my multimeter to test the 240 ohms Thanks - Zach

You need to put one lead on the terminal of the unplugged black with red striped wire coming from the stator, the other lead to the engine case. This test the exciter coil ( part or 1/2 of the stator ) which is known to go bad on these motors.
