I thought it would be cool to create a thread with all the owners of a Yamaha trike. Please tell us what machine(s) you own and include pictures if you want. I'm gonna edit the first post with all the member who join the club.
Also with the new forum, we now have an official group:

I think the front fender is still available. 1 years ago bikebandit still listed a ytm-200 front fender for $50 I believe.

Thank you guys to join the fun and maybe the Honda guys will be jealous....

Here's a few pics of my 86's. The one in the yard i've had for many years and it's stock other than exhaust, reeds and 1st overbore. Been to TF since 05. Always runs great. The other bike is the project and is in my garage attic. But it's is close to being done. There will be many very nice parts on this one, and it should run pretty good too......:naughty:

I think I need to accept it. You are probably the only one with one of those. Do you plan to reassemble it? Basically has long has there a Yamaha frame or engine I am gonna accept it. So this leave place for the dirtbike conversion and others...
Concerning your privaleges, I'm gonna put your name in the list in bold and italic character.:D

I know, i was wondering when i found it. The built date in 06/1986.
It was sold as a 87 model and it also said 1987 on the immatriculation.
That is why i drove 1400 kms (870milles) to pick it up.
I saw an other 87 DR for sale a few months ago in Ontario.
It is exactly inendicale to a 1986.
the wheels and the front fork are gold in color.

Did you install the Boyesen power reeds, or did the YT125 come with them? I'm wondering how much difference they make performance/power wise?
Also, are you running the stock exhaust?

old-yellow

I installed them and noticed that it made it have more throttle response at low end but I don't know if it gave it more power at top end or not and yes I am running stock exhaust.

There should be some STICKYS on this forum with post pics of your Tecates, post pics of your yamahas, post pics of your hondas, post pics of your beaters, post pics of your 70's etc . So a major pic thread is always at the top and can be added to and viewed all the time with ease.

I picked this up last weekend in my home town of Brunswick Ohio. The guy had it in there for $100 and I did not even try to talk him down. It is rough, but I started it on one pull with a rope. (Starter is on the way with help from Old-Yellow) Anyways.....The guy ran it with mixed oil and I would like to do the same. Any suggestions on the mix ratio? Originally I was going to buy it for the new tires that are on it, but I like it too much to part it out. If anyone has suggestions on what else to do as far as the oil pump and carburetor to run mixed fuel, I would love to know.

Thanks.....Vince

btw.....My boy Logan isn't really a punk....I told him to look "cool"

Vbb, if you do a "search" you should be able to find a thread on what to change for the running the premix in the gasoline. It's basically unhook the premix line from the tank to the pump and the line from the pump to the carb and block off the carb premix barb with one of those vaccuum hose block off caps and then add the premix to your gas and you should be good to go. Let the oil pump run a while without blocking it off to make sure all the premix is out of the oil pump. You don't have to do anything to the pump if you don't want to, just leave it in place. You mix your premix according to the manufacturers suggestion. Some premix oils have suggestions on the back of the bottle. Start with their recommendations. Have fun.

My Tri-Moto I just bought a few weeks ago . Cleaned up the plastic... it was really bad . I sanded for hours . Also put some new tires on the back and have a new front tire on the way .
Yesturday I swapped out the ancient front headlight and installed a 9006 bulb .

The little guy runs pretty strong for a 125 but I think i'm going to swap a 175 in it for alittle more :)

What part of the engine is the small black cover with the two tubes coming out of it? I have my first 2 stroke and I am not familiar with it. I do not have a manual yet. I am still looking to download one with no luck so far. Anyways....I am cleaning this up and wanted to know what this is. Thanks guys!

There is still a lot of people who didn't join the club. I am sure a lot of people are proud of owning a Yamaha trike.

I have a yt175, but I'm not too sure about being proud of owning it lol
Its so unrealiable and is just a piece of crap

They all gotta start somewhere. That is what makes it worthwhile when you get it looking nice and running decent. Remember, with some of these trikes, you have to undo 20 years of peoples' abuse and poor wrenching. Hang in there and keeping putting a little money and time in it.
Also, did you know that according to your picture, that your front brake hub is on the wrong side and that your front forks are backwards. Your brake hub and cable should be on the left side of the yt175, so your forks need switched around. You should have a trialing front axle, not a leading front axle. If you cared that is. Not bashing you so please don't be defensive.

Thanks a lot Vealmonkey and Alex, I've already put loads of time and money into it, but the previous owner literally messed everything up on it. Last year I bought a whole box load of parts which has helped a bit but mechanically it still sucks lol. yt175 (my buddy hit my brother on for mentioned ytm broke leg) since 02
yt 125/175 powered call it the mongrel since 07
zingger (which beets buddies pit bikes in backyard moto) since 07

unfortunately they never built anything with real suspension except the tri-z (my buddies is to fast for my taste )so i usually rock a 200x but like yamaha stuff better.

These are my Tri-Z that I've been working on for a while. The 85 yellow Tri-Z came from New Jersey from the 1st owner with OEM plastics in great condition, chain/sprockets , piston/rings, certificate of origin and service manuel. The 85 1/2 and true 86 were in boxes and milk crates that I bought from a dude in NC that use to race and own a race shop. They were a mese, I rebuilt the cranks and new top ends, plastics, powder coated all three frames. It was a lot of work and time in the shop and hunting down hard to find parts. I have a lot of parts so I'm building a fourth Tri-Z. I should have some pics shortly. Cheers.http://i578.photobucket.com/albums/ss227/gutterworks129/Tri-Z072.jpghttp://i578.photobucket.com/albums/ss227/gutterworks129/Tri-Z044.jpghttp://i578.photobucket.com/albums/ss227/gutterworks129/Tri-Z061.jpghttp://i578.photobucket.com/albums/ss227/gutterworks129/Tri-Z078.jpg

Well I've switch wheels and put the 8" with Turf Tammers back on the 85, 9"with the Banshee tires on the 85 1/2 and 9" with the 501's on the 86. The 86 is my favorite with the 6-speed trans and the white plastics. I just got a silver set of rims for the 85 1/2 which is what came on that year. I'm going to put black powder coated rims on the Tri-Z I'm building, maybe with black Baja rims!

well i have a 1984 ytm 200. its in good condition...new tires plastic is faded a little need decals runs great although the clutches is getting a little weak. i dont know what is after the 200 but always woundered. maybe some details could help...it has no reverse no electric start and is chain driven. it has a compression release cable comeing out of the recoil starter. any one know??? ill post some pics tomorrow. i had this thing for about five years know and my uncle is the original owner.

it is just a plain 200 unless you add the letter for the year..83=k idk bout the rest

Pipelinetriker, welcome, but the yt175 came with a suspension front end uless you have changed a bunch of parts over. Cox the yt175 only came out in 82 and 83. If you have 2 81's, more than likely they are 125s. It is also a bit of a pain to put 175 engines in the 80 and 81 frame, it's possible but a pain. Now you can switch the top ends, but the 80 and 81 engines have clutch baskets that take fewer clutch plates and fiber and a 175 top end on an 80 or 81 lower end tends to fry the clutch pretty fast. Maybe you guys ought to go out and check your machines a little more closely.

I have a Tri-Moto 225DX that my dad bought for hunting. I believe it's an '83 or '84. It's actually still at my mom's, but we use it around her farm. It's in excellent shape, but I came here for a parts question. Nice to meet you guys.

Now for my question. I was scouting for deer season a few weeks ago on the three wheeler, and ran into a bunch of downed trees. Somehow, I managed to bend the shifter. The problem is...I don't know what it's called! Does anybody know the name of the lever you click up and down to shift gears? I know it sounds like a stupid question, but I never bent it before, so I don't know. It looks like we could just take it off and replace it if I could find the part. Nothing else seems to be damaged. I just used it to cart out my deer this morning. It's just hard to shift because the lever is bent.

If anybody knows the name of that part (and maybe where I could get one without having to sell my kid), that would be great!
Thanks.

I just bought my first 1984 Yamaha YTM 225 DX a few weeks ago. I rode them when I was a kid, but could never afford one then, but when I was looking on Craiglist, I came on one for only $500.00. Sure it needs some work, but that is what I am looking forward to doing, but the best part is it is rideable!!! I am looking for any help I can on where to find parts for this cheap.
Thanks for letting me in!!!!!

Your front brake is on the wrong side... The axle should be behind the fork and the brake on the left side. But if your happy with the way it handle, keep it this way...

And welcome to all the new members!

seanndenise
12-16-2009, 09:34 PM
yeah the forks are switched around, ive seen a few different types of trikes this is done too. i even asked local bike shop what the purpose of doing this would be, the only answer i got was, someone had it apart and put it back together backwards and said wth ill leave it, or they did it on purpose to extend the wheel out farther to hold the front end down. it does extend the front wheel quite a bit.

i replaced the front bearings a couple months back and thought about putting it back to original but decided to leave it as it is.

thanks for the heads up though.

Also, I have the same bike, Blue 85' 225DX. Mine is in great condition, bought from original owner and he took great care of it. Really fun bike and quite the wheelie machine!

I have a 1985 Tri-Moto 200cc. Having a very unusual problem, to me anyways. Everytime you turn sharp to the left, the trike dies. I thought it was a carb problem, so I took the carb off of my other one that runs perfect, and it done the exact same thing! While at idle, if you are standing on the left side of the trike and tip it towards you it will run perfect, if you tip it the other direction to the right it will die within 3 seconds. Like I said I switched carbs and it done the same thing. I have no idea what can be causing this, any info is much appreciated, thanks!

A seat cover from the Moshes and I'm looking into the better front tire/wheel conversions ( would like to adapt a Tri-z front with disk brake but all in time). It starts as soon as I hit the button and has brought me hours of great ridning around the house with my son and his 70cc quad. Here it is it sits now, build thread to come in the winter months.

Here is a picture of my 225dx I bought in 95' and sold in 98'. I wish I still had it as it was such a great bike. I definitely regretted selling it.

These are my Tri-Z that I've been working on for a while. The 85 yellow Tri-Z came from New Jersey from the 1st owner with OEM plastics in great condition, chain/sprockets , piston/rings, certificate of origin and service manuel. The 85 1/2 and true 86 were in boxes and milk crates that I bought from a dude in NC that use to race and own a race shop. They were a mese, I rebuilt the cranks and new top ends, plastics, powder coated all three frames. It was a lot of work and time in the shop and hunting down hard to find parts. I have a lot of parts so I'm building a fourth Tri-Z. I should have some pics shortly. Cheers.http://i578.photobucket.com/albums/ss227/gutterworks129/Tri-Z072.jpghttp://i578.photobucket.com/albums/ss227/gutterworks129/Tri-Z044.jpghttp://i578.photobucket.com/albums/ss227/gutterworks129/Tri-Z061.jpghttp://i578.photobucket.com/albums/ss227/gutterworks129/Tri-Z078.jpg

I lived in Las Cruces, New Mexico in the 80s and owned a 85 yellow Tri-Z that looked just like your machine. The thing was a fire cracker. Almost 2 fast for trail riding. I got it used at the Yamaha dealership in Las Cruces, at the begining of 1986. It came with a pair of wide track tires on rims also. I rode it so much I wore out the trail tires and had to switch to the wide "Track" type tires. I really miss that machine. Had to give it up when I moved to Florida... Boy your Yellow Tri-Z looks great....

Here is mine: 1986 YTZ 250.

I brought it back to life from a box of parts....

I am getting a new top end, crank, and porting done.

I've also got a 1986 YZ 250 engine that I might port and install later down the road...

Actually in addition to my post above, do these machines farewell being used in the winter? Traction maybe an issue, however my question is more focused on the wear and
tear of running the unit in the winter. Thanx

Add my name..I just got my 1st Yamaha(yellow 225DX). Now this one was a quick flip..used the funds to buy the others.
144998

then my second(yellow 200e)
144999

and third(black 225DR SE).
145000

I figured it's time to broaden my horizons!!

The black one is my favourite..I found the compression a bit low and burning some oil so the cylinder went for a 1 over bore and high compression piston.

I look forward to riding it once it's done..

Well you are right..the trikes aren't very good in the winter once there is 6-8 inches under them they mostly don't go anywhere. But then again neither do quads..

But as far as doing them harm, hell no! They love it..
