OK, picked up a 1985 atc200s last weekend. I put new bulbs in the headlight and the tailight, they work fine till you give it the throttle. It is apparently getting to many volts, what causes this and what do I need to do to fix it? My bike parts guy is trying to sell me a voltage regulator like on a snowmobile. They didn't come from the factory with one so I'm not putting one on now. So what do I need to replace to fix this?

voltage regulator like this may work...

But why would I need a voltage regulator? They didn't come from the factory with one. What went bad on it that would cause this?

Nothing is obvious, check the harness for chaffed wires, also, are you sure the bulbs your using are correct? I am pretty sure that bike uses a 12volt bulb rather than a 6 volt. But I am not sure about that.
I can't see something failing inside the stator to cause that issue, wires must be crossed somewhere.

they require a 12v bolt. all honda bikes (trikes here) are 12v. I think it has some sort of a regulator on the side. it does not look like that, i think it has something.

Are you sure? Don't get me wrong, I know you are the man! LOL!
But my 1980 110 still had it's original bulbs, they where 6 volt and the replacement bulbs are 6 volts
I am pretty sure all later ATC's like from 81 and later are 12volt. But the early one I am pretty sure are 6volt

anyway, what I am trying to say, It is a 12volt bulb you are using right? Silly question, I know, but you would
be amazed at some of the things I have seen being a mechanic, he he LOL!

Also, check your manual, follow the wires and see what you come up with, Good Luck!

yea your right. man i'm getting old!!!!! it's been a while since i touched a pre-80s trike. (80 and eariler). Thanks for kickign me in the teeth ;) I did desirve it. hehe

yea i totally agree seen a lot of places hand off 6v stuff to sya it works and it needed 12v.

i ws jsu thtinking of something maybe the generator (coul pack below in the case) is bad and once he revs it it over energizes and causes a short? Just a thought..

Quick fix is to install a aftermarket volt pack for under $20. Search the forums for Volt Pack ( posted by Howdy ) and you will find pictures and info. 2 wires to hook up and 1 zip tie or bolt and your good to go.
