250r fork swap, what works?

I just got an 82 250r (air cooled), runs mint. I was talking with a few people and browsing the forum, and i've been told that a major improvement over the years for a 250r was the forks.

It was suggested that i get a longer or more narrow fork, like a dirt bike, to improve handling.

Anyone know if this is correct? Has anyone here done this? Any other forks out there that are compatible?
