im looking at 2 nice sx trikes now, and will get one this weekend, whats your guy opinions about the 85 vs 87

the 85 looks very clean and has racks, plastic tank.... the guy will trade for my 85 big red 250 beater, my old non running 82 xr200r bike plus cash, and he will deliver it 150 miles 1 way.

the 87 also looks good, the guy wants 300 bucks less and i have to drive 150 miles 1 way to get it.....

87 is far superior. The rearend is the KEY.

I would drop both differential oils and see. Look for ripped driveshaft boots. Water destroys the rear ends of these things.

I personally hate plastic tanks.

what makes it so superior?

The way the drum seals is the biggest improvement and a better swingarm design.

I believe the 85 rears got water in them alot and water kills once in. Do like honda 250sx said Drop the oils in the rears just for precaution.

I would go with an 87. Jeff mentioned water damage...just to elaborate on water and '85 models please refer to this thread...http://www.3wheelerworldforums.com/showthread.php?t=92488 that is my sx -'85 and what water has done for me!:) Besides 87's are rarer. Also the 85's are a pain in butt to start in cold weather unless you have the cold start kit which is impossible to come by. Go with the 87, you wont be dissappointed :)

Well, I don't know much about the 87' nor do I really know much of the differences between the two. I do know that I have an 85' and I love it. I don't have any issues with starting it in the cold. Mine fires right up regardless, that is, until the next time I try it due to the fact that I'm bragging about it (Kiss of Death). I actually had it sitting for about 4 months without a start and it fired right up in single digit weather. I like the 85'.

You don't have starting issues because some of the 85's were corrected.

They barely start below 35 degrees without the fix!!

Very simple to fix though and if anyone has the issue it can be found in a search very easy......

Oh, cool. Didn't know that either. Consider myself Lucky then. Thanks. I still vote for the 85' though. If it matters...

What are your guys' opinions on the '86 SX? Anything I should look out for, other than the usual? I might be picking one up this weekend...

I'd go for the 87 for all the previous reasons with the updated swinger, plus IMO the red fenders with the white tank gives it the 200X-350X look--sort of:naughty: ROADTRIP! Either way I'm sure you'll be pleased.

I think 86 and 87 are the same. I have and 86 and LOVE it, it's a total beater but that's OK with me. I just resurected it after about a 15 year hibernation--rebuilt the carb, new used gas tank, a new plug, three new tires and a battery fires right up and runs like a champ. Even after 15 years the cylinder wasn't siezed from just sitting a true testament to HONDA'S they're unstopable. If you can get the 86 at a good price get it.

Yeah I'm really hoping I get it. When I first started looking at 3 wheelers the SX was the one I wanted, until I saw how much they went for on eBay. This '86 is for sale in my home town, so there's no reason for me to not go look at it, seems like a fair price too. http://images.craigslist.org/3na3m23l01f512b1g891o2672da494665177e.jpg
