Dude, just buy the Ricky flywheel. Yes they are expensive but they are totally worth it. I know you don't have the money but anyone can come up with $125 even if you don't have a job. Pick up cans on the side of the road or something. It is a must have for a Tecate, not having one is like trying not to mix oil in with your gas, it's just not going to work. lol.

my stocker was great till the bolt chipped a magnet. i know i should get a ricky but i'll have to wait till i can sneek it from my wife. she's so tired of my spending money on my toys... if i buy the ricky i might as well get the stator to go with it..

I have the Ricky flywheel and I just soldered the ricky ignition winding into my stock stator. Just the ignition winding is $39 instead of $125 for the whole thing. And some people say if you buy the whole thing it wont be timed correctly. Some say yes some say no but I see no reason to buy the whole stator unless your stator got totally trashed some how.

Over at KXriders forum some people set up their 90-04 KX500s with 86-89 KX500 ignitions cause the flywheel is smaller. Some others have put more modern (2001) KX250 ignitions on their KX500s.

If the 1986 KX500 ignition system is similar to the 1986 KX250 (which in my opinion it is), then this opens up a world of possibilities for using more modern and available KX250 electrical systems on Tecates.

my stator looks pretty good. what will happen if i run my flywheel missing a 1/4 of one magnet? probably won't be good on the crank and bearings.

nd4speed, let me know if you figure out what works...

The only way for me to find out is if the stator plates and flywheels bolt to the Tecates. After that- degree wheel and set timing (using complete system cdi/stator/flywheel/). Some people like BigGreenMachine have had all the stuff on hand to see what fits. I unfortunately do not. I am always looking for answers about what swaps.

For instance, A stator coil from YZ80 1985-2000 tests at 432-648/4.0-6.0 the same ohms as 83-85 KX250 and 1986-89 KX500 according to Clymer (but Clymer has been wrong before with specs) and also according to a stator coil (electrix i think) seller on ebay. I would not doubt that it works. It is just a magneto generator.

A KX250 flywheel may not be as heavy but you might be able to fit weights on it behind the cover if torque and power delivery down low is necessary.
