I have found a deal on an 83 250R that is suppsed to be complete but needing a motor rebuild. Has the parts with it, but is $500. I haven't seen it yet, but am going tomorrow. I know it's not a WC trike, but is it as good as an 84 or were there major changes that would make the 83 not so desireable......

not much changes between 83 and 84 as far as anything - a little different rear shock set up and possible different swinger - but the majority is the same - from a performance aspect.

83 is just as good as the 84 in my opinion they just beefed up the shock linkage and redesigned the rear shock in 84 I never noticed a difference in ride or performance though. I also noticed the rear axle is slightly different.

Think $500 is a fair price with parts included to do a rebuild? If it's nice complete and running what could it bring? Not sure if I'd keep it....but maybe fix it and turn it back out...

make sure your rear axle is straight, they are going for a fair penny lately.

There real easy to work on so if the bikes in pretty good shape with all the rebuild parts I'd say yeah it's worth it.

Do they have the same front end as a 200X?

I've got an 84 and its one of my favorite bikes. I would recommend buying it if it looks halfway decent.

the tripples are different but the forks are the same diameter I believe, thats for the 83-85 200x and the front wheel, rotor and axle are the same aswell as the brake caliper.

I went and looked at5 it and made the arrangements to buy it. It is in very good shape. Plastics are cracked, but the tank is mint and the seat is perfect. Maier can help with the fenders and a quick rebuild and its a mint bike.... Pics to follow....

Dusty but nice, the tank is as shiny inside as the fork tubes are....

Will 350x forks or 200x forks and/or trees fit the 83-84 250R's and is there any improvements? I heard you can put the AC250r guts inside 350x forks but would or could I use the 350x front end I have for any improvement or advantage in handling/ride? Or should I just leave it stock and cherry?

Followup question, does the 350x fork and 200x/Air Fooler 250R have the same diameter....? Will 350x forks fit in Air Fooler 250R/200x Triples, for added fork length and travel.....??

I just put on a pair of what i was told were 84 250r forks onto my 86 350x. If they are 84 forks, i cant tell the difference between them and my 350x forks. But i have no way to say for certain that is indeed what they are.

I think the 250r forks where the best but the 83-85 200x had the same diameter.

I have read that you can put the 84 250R guts in a 350X fork, but I put my 350x forks next to my 84 200X and they were approx 3" longer than the 200X forks.....

Also, looks like the Air Fooler and 350X share the same fork seals....

Hmmmm. Well i guess i was sold a pair of 350x forks, because they are identical to the ones that came off of my 350x.

If that is the case then they should fit in the triples. How long are they compared to the 250r forks?

WOW! Look at that post count!

Better pop out another post.....!

I am not sure how long an Air Fooler fork is compared to either a 200X or 350X fork.....

Anyone pop out a measurement of all three?

Daddio
01-26-2009, 10:54 PM
Just measured an 84 fork tube that is off of the bike. 31 3/4 inches
That's all I've got handy.

Daddio

That measurement was from the center of the axle to the top of the tube.

They are the same diameter but not the same fork.

I did the 84 damping rod conversion to my 86 350X forks.

I can't say anything bad about your 84 forks, I'm sure they are very similar to the 350X in terms of strength and performance. Just changing the seals and the weight oil will help out allot.

If I had it my way, I'd have an 85/86 250R front end on everything......

Well, I got to visit my 250R today. I was in town for a brief spell, and stopped to see the guy. Snapped a few pics of my new toy, and upon closer inspection, I am going to need a frame. Appears to have been repaired just under the neck, but no worries, I hope I can find a good frame somewhere along the way, as I am not in a hurry to get this one done. I'll pick it up when I am back in town in a few weeks....I have a nice pair of Kenda Scorpion 18" tires for it, so I can drop the trailpro trailpro in the pond...I have the new sleeve and the new piston to go with it, so anyone have a good recommendation on a reasonable hookup for a small cylinder machine shop?

It's rust free and metal, so it's not really a concern to me. Biggest thing will be to find a frame.

Nope. 83 came with the prolink. 81 and 82 didn't. You'll notice the chain and brake are on the wrong sides for it to be the swingarm from an 85 or 86 R.

Older R's are the coolest IMHO. :beer

The swingarm or the bike itself?

The swingarm won't fit the first gen airfooler - the bike itself? If you were ALOT closer. :beer

Bought it...have a spare frame, 4" inch extended axle, and a running motor....now I have to address the brakes, time for some master rebuilds and caliper clean up.....

Are you talking in the first set of pics? I knew it wasn't right, but it came with it. I do have a correct exhaust for it tho....

Anyone need a TRX pipe?
