1). How do I determine the "build date" of my Big Red? Specifically, I am trying to determine if I have a "early" or "late" build, so I can determine if I have the carb with the "upgraded" cold start kit. Can anyone help here?
Also, in another post someone suggested a carb from a 350X would solve cold start problems? Were they the same size carb as used on the Big Red?
I just picked up my big red, and will be using it here in Michigan, where its colder than sin now.
2). Where can I get some rear tire chains for my 85 Big Red? Any idea on price?
Thanks in advance.

unless yours is an '86 model your carb will have cold starting issues

I have a set of tire chains that I'd be willing to let go at a reasonable price. PM me an offer. They were on my 82 200E up until a couple months ago when I took them off and sold the trike.

See if there is a sticker like this. If so it tells when it was built.

I cannot say for sure if the 85 350X carb will solve it, but I think it will. The 86 carb got some upgrades so I'd place my money on that puppy.....
It's not a big deal, people look too deep into it. If you can drill out that starter jet and get the chips out of the passages, it will be just as fine as an 87 carb or other carbs with the upgrade kit. Do a search on "cold start" and you'll find tons of information (I hope :D)

My 85 starts fine, but it's kept in an insulated garage, usually no heat on though. It's started easily at -20c, but it is cold blooded, you have to sit on it and keep it going for about 5 minutes before driving off. Not as big a deal as most people seem to make of it though.

mine will not start to save its life without a lot of effort. So i know how you feel about it being really annoying when all you want to do is go for a ride...

I've purchased a 1986 250 big red carb, so hopefully it starts well. -3 F this morning in the Detroit area .
