engine problems

my friend has a 200? engine its electric start its around the 84' era it looks almost the same as my 81 atc200 anyways onto the problem he has to run it on half choke if he leaves it off it spits and spudders also it doesnt have the original airbox its just an air filter :crazy:

First give the carb a good cleaning. The open element filter might be making it run a bit lean, but it shouldnt be enough to be noticable. So clean the carb, Make sure the petcock is free flowing along with the fuel lines.
