View Full Version : Picked up a small winter project

I picked this up the other day. It is actually a pretty solid piece. No rust, very straight and complete. The guy was going to re-ring it because he said it wasn't running right. He got it all taken apart and lost interest in it. Other than being apart the only real issues I've found are the plastics were chewed on very extensively by his dog. and the seat was unprofessionally recovered. I have a few 70 engines and parts around so it should be a fairly easy fix. This is an 84 like one of the ones I fixed up for 1upfront when he was a kid. She is going to be all stock:naughty: .

I'm starting to make a list of the things it needs and after I get the new stuff I'll get started. :beer

Well we finally got a nice enough day to get out and dig through the parts archives. I dug out several engines and various boxes of honda 70 parts.:naughty:
Got the little bugger down in the " basement".:D A possible sign of things to come.
Actually I have a big workbench down there where I will be mixing and matching parts trying to find the best combination.

Well I think it's time for an update on this. I have worked on it off and on and I finally have it on the down hill slide. I decided when I bought it that I didn't want anything chinese on it. Since I work at a Honda dealership I tried to use everything Honda on it, with great success. It hasn't been cheap. So far It's all 70 and all Honda. The only thing I don't have for it is the exhaust. The stock one is junk. I would love to put a cobra on it but can't find one in stock anywhere. I'll try to get some pics up soon.:pics: :pics: :pics:

Here is what went into this project. I still have painting and reassembly to do. It shouldn't be much longer before it is totally done.

Seals, bearings, valves,etc.

I went with a Web cam. It's a Honda cam that has been welded and reground.

The new Honda piston looks a little different than the old one.

I bought a couple rigid hones a while back so I used one to take this cylinder to the next size up. It took some time but turned out pretty well.

I took the head to the local atv repair shop to have the valve seats recut and also had him put new valve guides in it at the same time. He did a real nice job for me.

Here is the tank ready for paint. 1upfront smoothed out all of the lumps and bumps for me. I will paint it soon.

I also picked up some pretty nice rear fenders for it. I forgot to get pics of them.

Do you have a scale to weight the new and old pistons. Or is the new piston a high compression unit?

No I don't have a scale. The piston is a stock piston for a 1970 cl70. It is a little higher compression than the atc piston. I'm also using the head from the cl70. The head I took off of the atc had been broken and welded and I didn't want to take a chance on it failing.

As close as I can figure :wondering $850. I still need an exhaust so when I'm done it will be close to $1000. Hopefully it will last another 25 years.:D If it does I'll be 77 years old.

That paint job turned out really cherry. You should have used an xl70 engine if you wanted to stay honda.

Well I decided that I would add a little twist to the paint on the tank. The 73s had flames on them. I like flames but mine is an 84 and I didn't want to try to copy the 73 flames so I decided to try ghost flames. They are different for sure.:w00t:

I am going to sand blast the wheels today and paint them and the frame and then the assembly process will begin. I still don't have a pipe yet.:wondering

Age is just a state of mind. My mind tells me I'm thirtysomething.
The 70 will be at TF. You'll have to catch me if you want to see it. :naughty: :beer

It's a very delicate process. There is a very fine line between ghost flames and Flames. If you get too much on they show up all of the time. I mixed ultra red mica and white mica with a clearcoat and dusted it on. I started with the white and used the red on the tips of the flames. When that was dry enough I unmasked the flames and sprayed clear over the entire tank again. I should have used a violet mica because the red was overpowered by the color of the tank. I had hoped it would have a two tone effect but that didn't happen. Live and learn.

I finally got a muffler for this project. It's an old supertrapp. I'll have to make my own header for it. :w00t:

We have been slow at work lately so I started taking small projects into work so I can at least get something done while waiting for something to do. Today I asked 1upfront if he would fix my foot guard and make another one to replace one that was missing when I bought it. I handled what little work we had while he worked on my foot guards. This is what he did. Woot!

This is the one that was broken. The loop on the end was broken off. You can see the piece he welded on.

This is the whole piece after repair.

I spent a good part of the last three days finishing up my project. It fired on the second pull and started on the fifth! :w00t: It runs very well. It was dark when I got it going and the clutch needs some adjustment so I didn't get to ride it. The super trapp went on very easily. It will need some fine tuning and a good deal of riding. :w00t: I'll get some pics up tomorrow.

I could help you ride that. That thing is sweeet!

Daddio
05-27-2009, 08:11 AM
Well I figured out the clutch issue. When I bought this thing the topend was off and I never got to ride it to see what other problems it had. When I tore it down I saw that the clutch was smoked . One of the friction discs had all of the friction part worn off and was a blue steel disc. So I bought new friction discs and I had another clutch from an old z50 that looked nice compared to what came out of it so I mixed and matched parts and rebuilt the z50 clutch. Well come to find out the drive gear/ output gear on that on that clutch assembly was larger than the one on the atc so it couldn't engage the drive gear on the engine side and It wouldn't move. I could feel the trans engage when I put it in gear but that was all It did. So I had to pull the side cover back off to find all of this out. Once I figured out what went wrong I had to clean up the parts out of the atc clutch that I needed to make it work and put it all back together. It works very well now. Just like brand new. Now I need to get it jetted and tune the pipe and it should be good to go.:w00t: :Bounce :beer

Okay I have a couple pics of the little project. It's about 99% complete. I ordered a new rear sprocket for it today. Someone put a 428 sprocket on it. I didn't realize it until I went to put my new 420 chain on. It rained tonight until after dark so I couldn't get any good pics . There is also a couple of 1upfronts new 70. He got a steal of a deal on it. A nice pair.

I took my little project out for some test and tune today. The weather was absolutely perfect. I almost have the jetting nailed down, we ran out of daylight before I got it finished. It should be broken in pretty well by now. Tomorrow we will give 1upfront's 70 a good tune-up and finish dialing mine in. :pics: :pics:

This is mine. You can see the supertrapp sticking out a little. I sounds great. Not quite as loud as the cobra's.

Here is one of Hartley's with mine in the background. His is in a lot better shape than mine was when I got it.

It looks like I may have to order another pilot jet. It's really snappy on the bottom, the middle has a slight stumble and when it gets past that it feels like a 2stroke when it hits the powerband. It's an auto clutch and when I shift into second gear It does a power wheelie and I have to back out of the throttle a little.:w00t: Pretty good for 74cc's.:beer

Well I took the 70 to the track tonight and did a few laps with it. One of the 70 guru's told me why my engine had the stumble in the mid rpm range. I will work on it later this week. It really rips. A couple of the guys hooked my up with some slicks and that totally changed the personality of it. It wanted to turn left really bad.
Here are some pics with slicks. I'll put up the video of Hartley doing a few laps one it later.
